(Keefe's POV)

I watched the sunset with Ellerie, Alsee, and Macie, hoping that Sophie would show up, too, even if it was with an ability restrictor on. When she didn't come, my heart sank.

Did she really think she was a monster, like the kids had told me?

"Okay, guys, bedtime." I mumbled, sadness overtaking my features as I gently nudged my kids inside. Something felt wrong about the house without Sophie there. And it feels strange to think about her in the context of her first name. Everything felt strange.

Once I had tucked my kids in bed, I decided to make some cinnacreme and wait for my wife to show up.

But... She never did.

(Ellerie, Alsee, and Macie's POV)

We were all huddled up by the staircase the next morning. We expected to hear laughter from Mom and Dad after Mom had come back. But all we heard were the quiet snoring sounds of our Dad on the porch swing. He had waited all night for Mom... But she never came.

Ellerie decided to start making some Blitzenberry Muffins with fruit, while Macie and Alsee made everyone's beds.

Dad finally awoke, looking exhausted as Ellerie fed him some muffins and asked how he slept.

"Not great." He admitted. "And I'm not sure where your mother is."

"Well, didn't you leave a note for her on your bed?" Ellerie suggested.

Dad's face lit up as he sprinted upstairs. We all followed him.

There was no longer a note on the bed. But there was a blank piece of paper.

"Get the lemon juice!" Alsee exclaimed.

"Why?" Macie asked, confused.

"It'll show us the secret message Mom left for us!" Alsee replied. Ellerie snatched the lemon juice from downstairs and put a little bit of it onto the paper.

Words started to form, and Dad read it aloud.

"I love you guys so so much. But... I can't stay with you. Vertina was wrong. You're not my weakness. You make me stronger. And no ability restrictor can change that. So... I'm not going to tell you where I am. You need to forget about me completely. I'm sorry for the way things turned out, but it's better to keep everyone safe. I love and miss you already. Please don't tell anyone about this note. Just say that I went missing or that I'm dead, because... I can't have anybody trying to find me. -Your wife and mother, Sophie Foster." Dad sat down on his bed, staring at the note in disbelief.

"I didn't even get to say goodbye." He whispered. We all wrapped him in a hug.

"What if we never see Mommy again?" Macie mumbled.
