David wakes up at 9 a.m. to shower and get ready for the coffee date with May. Jason already was awake for class (and from a horrible hangover). David was halfway dressed (with pants but no shirt) when someone knocks on the door. David opens the door.
"Uh... It's May..." May's face turns tomato red as she stares at David's upper body.
"Oh goodness ok. Uh.. Here come in." David waves his hand to find May's wrist. He gently pulls her in and closes the door. "Sorry I'm not ready yet." David bites the inside of his cheek.
"Oh thats totally fine. Can I help you? I- I mean.. Do you need help?" May swallows. The air fills with awkwardness.
"You MAY. Get it? I bet you get that a lot. Anyway... I can't really find my dresser. I'm still getting used to the room." David isn't awkward at all. He feels that he can be himself around her.
"Hahah! Ok. Hand out please." She laughs at his stupid joke. David puts out his hand and then she puts her's in his. She leads his body to the dresser and then makes him grab a plane grey t-shirt with a pocket in the front on the right side of his chest. "Do you need help putting it on?" May asks.
"Um.. I don't want to ask too much... Yeah." David feels weak.
"It's not asking too much. I'd love to help you." Her eyes are like an ocean. Blue as can be. Her hair is a dark brown and she has olive skin like David.
"Thank you so much." David sighs.
"No problem. Raise your arms up. I'm going to put this shirt over your head."
"Ok." David smiles and does what May says. She stands on her tiptoes as she slips the shirt over his head and helping his arms through the arm holes and his head through the neck hole. His hair is messed up and it almost covers his closed eyes. He took off his glasses for a shower and never put them back on.
"Ok. There you go sir." She fixes his hair and hands him his glasses which were on his nightstand along with his pager. She puts that on one of his belt loops.
"I've always had trouble with that. Thank you." It felt to David like that minute she helped him lasted forever. At least he wanted it too.
"No problem." May smiles and grabs his hand... To help him of course. When she first did that, David was terrified. He knew that this was going to be more than just a friendship and like the world fell on his broad shoulders, but then... He felt... Loved. In a way that his mother did but also in another way that he can't understand. Like never before. "Let's go." May leads him out the front door of the school. Today was sunny. A Tuesday. May's hand in David's, walking on the bridge overlooking a body of water. A lake. "Can we take a little detour?" May asks, her sweet voice sounded like she was smiling.
"Of course." David stood there. Listening to his future.
"Ok. I'll lay down the setting we are in." May sat on a red bench and David did the same. "We are on a bridge, bright day, and the bridge is overlooking a lake. You are sitting next to May, a girl with dark brown hair, blue eyes, and olive skin. Like you. This 'May' person loves challenges and adventures and playing guitar and singing and cats and a lot of other things." May lays her head on David's shoulder. "Now. Give me your hand." She takes David's hand and puts it on her heart. "Do you feel that? That's my heartbeat. Now feel yours." David doesn't say a word, he just does what she says. He is memorized by her voice. His heartbeat is calmer than expected. He takes her hand and puts it on his heart. "Even though you are blind I want you to see. I want you to seek for sight. Even though you may never see again, I want you to feel. I want you to hear and listen. I want these things for you because I saw something in you and I think you saw something in me." May stares at David. David knows just where to put his hand. He puts it on her cheek and puts her hair behind her ear.
"I did see something in you. I'm not entirely sure what it is yet but I think we can find that out together." He lowers his hand and puts it on the bench, behind Mays back. The silence was nice. "Birds."
"What about them?" May asks.
"Oh, I'm just naming off the things that I think are beautiful. Even though I can't see them." David replies confidently.
"I think that is a wonderful idea, and yes, most birds are very beautiful." May never takes her eyes off the water.
"I have an idea. I'll keep a journal of all the things you think are beautiful. That will be fun. Oh! And I can draw those things and hang them on your wall or put them in your pocket and you can imagine what they are. It doesn't really matter what they are. That will be good. Yeah..." Her voice trails off.
"That will be great." David smiles. A canoe passes under the bridge. "Boats. I remember seeing those as a kid. I don't really remember really though."
"Boats can be beautiful. It depends on who takes care of it." May swings her legs so they are taking up the rest of the bench and her back is under David's arm.
"We should get a boat." David pitches the idea into the warm air.
