Goodbye.

"I'm sorry but it's malignant. You have to stay here. We have a nice room for you." The doctor looks sympathetic. Mays Chordoma has turned malignant. That means it's very serious. More deadly. "I'll let you take a minute." The doctor goes out of the room and leaves May, David and Pete just sitting there. May and David were crying but Peter didn't know what was happening. He just sat there, staring at his balling parents. He stayed quiet though. The doctor comes back and tells her the side affects and what chemo she has to take and the sends them to a special holding place for patients.
"Mama... Are you okay?" Peter shyly taps on his mothers leg.
"No Peter. I'm not okay." She turns to David. "Take him and yourself home. I'll call you."
"But M-" David starts.
"Do it." May grips his shoulder. "Go." The two drive home in silence. As soon as they get home Pete runs to his room and buries his face into his pillow to cry. Why did his mother yell at him? Did she hate him?
"Hey buddy?" David walks into his room and sits in a chair next to his bed. "Hey. Are you okay?" He rubs his back. Peter kept his face in his pillow.
"Mhm." He mumbles. He lied. He wasn't okay.
"Look at me." David turns him around and looks at Petes red, tear- stained face. "What's wrong?"
"Mamas not ok. She yelled at me and then told me she wasn't okay." A tear fell down Petes face.
"Buddy... She will be perfectly fine. She was just a little amped up and that why she yelled at you. You're not in trouble." He gave him a hug.
"What's wrong with mama? Why can't she come home with us?" Pete sunk back into his bed.
"Mama is sick."
"Is it bad?"
"No son. Mama is going to be okay. Get some sleep."
"Okay. G'night." David helps him with his covers and turns on his night light on the way out of his room.
David stared at the ceiling without the ability to sleep. May is a strong person, but is she strong enough? He closes his eyes but doesn't fall asleep.
"Daddy? Are you asleep?" David cracks his eyes open just enough for him to see Petes little bare feet on the wood floor.
"What's up?" David opens his eyes fully and sits up just enough.
"Can I sleep with you tonight?" He rocks back and forth on his heels and toes. He holds a teddy bear in his hands, the same one May gave David on the day he left college.
David sighs and replies.
"Of course you can." Rips the sheets off the bed just enough so Peter can climb in. His feet pitter-patter on the floor and he jumps into the bed.
"G'night again." He closes his eyes.
"G'night again." David still can't sleep. He stays up the whole night worrying about May. Worrying about how he might have to break the news of her death to all his friends and family and.. Pete. But her doctors are very advanced. They won't let that happen.
"Good morning Pete. Come eat your breakfast." David made eggs for breakfast.
"But whyyyyyyyy?" He whines and rubs his eyes.
"Because after you eat we will go and see your mama." Pete straightens his posture and gobbles up his breakfast. "You must've been hungry." David ruffles his sons hair.
"Yeah. Let's go see Mama." He pats his belly then hops out of his chair, running to his room. David goes to his room to change his shirt and pants then grabs Peter to leave.

"Hey little man." May was losing her voice and her hands were cold as she held David's hands. She kissed Pete on the cheek.
"Hi mama. Are you gonna be okay?" Peter looked sad.
"I'm going to be just fine. Don't you worry." She smiled. "Can you go follow this nice lady? Her name is Karen and she will take you to a play area." She pats Petes back and mouths something to Karen. Karen introduced herself and took him out the door. After a long pause, May spoke. "I don't have much longer. David, you have to move on. You have to be strong for him. Raise him right. Do what you have to do. Heck, even get remarried if it makes you and him happy but just-" David pulls her into a kiss for the last time. They stayed at the hospital for hours. May explains to Peter that she is in a lot of pain and that she is going away soon. They pulled the plug at 11:23 p.m. on May 28, 2015. Her funeral was held on a Friday afternoon. That day was sunny, just for her, Pete thought. It's weird, Pete didn't cry in any of this. It's like he knew that it was for the best. At the funeral, David spoke to all his friends and family saying:
"May was my hero. Back when I had no eyesight at all she helped me to see. See past my blindness. See love. She was my hero and now I want to be my sons hero." The truth is, no one is bounded to their disabilities and problems. It's what you make of those problems that defines your character. Happiness is a choice. You can have the worst problems and disabilities but you can always choose to not mope around and point out all the grossness you have. Why worry?
