I can hear the leaves rustling against the ground when Peter plops down next to me

I can hear the leaves rustling against the ground when Peter plops down next to me. I need to ask him what happened to those boys, but how do I ask him without him getting defensive and closing himself off again? Screw it.

"Peter. What did you do to those boys?" I ask slowly. I want him to open up to me, so I have to be cautious.

"They won't be bothering you anymore snowflake, trust me."

"Peter I promise you I'm not worth punishing them over. You have known them much longer than you have known me, what they did to me is not important enough for what ever it is you did to them."

"That's the thing," he suddenly looked into my eyes and moved his upper body closer to mine, "I feel like I've known you my whole life. I don't know why, or how, but you are supposed to be here. Were connected somehow, I know you feel it too. Don't you, snowflake?" I have to lean in closer to be able to hear his whispers, but I'm glad that all the other boys are to distracted dancing about to hear what Peter is saying to me.

"Yes. I feel it, but why? How are we conn-" I cut myself off with a quiet gasp when I feel Peters lips brush softly against  mine. Not a kiss, but a gentle touch, and it's not nearly enough. I hadn't realized we were this close, but now every fiber of my body is begging me to move closer.

"mama? Where's key? Can I go to bed now?" Holy cannoli. I completely forgot about the six year old asleep in my lap. I couldn't mentally face palm harder if I tried.

Jumping away from Peter, who unashamedly has not made a move to back away, I respond to maverick, "Hey mav, key is playing with the big boys right now, but I can take you to bed okay?" He nods his head then falls instantly back asleep on my lap. Before I can pick him up, Peter pulls him into his own arms, stands, then reaches down a had to help me up. I take his out stretched hand, and I can feel the rough calluses that inhabit his skin. It's not a gross sort of rough, but a manly kind of rough. One that tells you he does hands on work, and he does a lot of it.

Once I realize I'm still holding his hand and starting at him, I drop it like its hot coal. Shoot. come on nick, pull yourself together.

"Come on, let's take all the littles to the home tree, I'll help you." All I can do is nod and follow when he starts walking towards the other littles who are sitting in a circle by the fire playing a made up game with stones. There are six "little ones" in total.  "Little ones" consisting of boys under ten. There is Kocoum who is 10, the twins Archer and Kethan are both 8, Rhys who is 7 along with Lucian, and the youngest is maverick at 6. Once they are all up and following us, Lucian asleep in my arms, we begin to walk to the home tree. "So tell me about yourself snowflake."

"Well," Oh gods. what am I supposed to say, I am a major control freak who's paranoid and has mommy issues? "Well, I used to live in an orphanage. I had an older sister there but I haven't seen her in years. My biological brother, Henry, was named after my older brother there. I would give anything to see him again, see how he's doing. With stasia, my older sister, I know she's safe and happy otherwise she would have found her way back to me. But I havent the slightest clue if Henry is happy now."
