"Sit down, Y/N. We need to talk."You did as he said, your heart pounding with a mix of fear and anticipation. "Dad, what's going on? Why did you call me here?"
Your father sighed deeply, then sat down on his chair, his eyes locking onto yours. "Jaesung called last night, worried that something had happened to you. You should never leave the team uninformed, especially in times like these."
You nodded, feeling a mix of guilt and frustration. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to worry anyone. I just needed to follow up on a lead."
Your father's gaze softened slightly, but his tone remained serious. "We can't afford to make mistakes now, Y/N. Not with what's happening."
He then reached for a file on the coffee table and threw it towards you. You caught it, looking down at the label. The Son case.
A chill ran down your spine as you opened the file and began to read.
Photos and documents spilled out, detailing the gruesome murders and the patterns that matched the current killings.
"The same pattern," you murmured, more to yourself than to him. "This case is famous. It could be anyone copying it."
Your father leaned back in his chair, his eyes never leaving you. "Yes, but there's something else you need to know. I saved a girl that day. Her name was Son Chaeyoung. She was an orphan after I killed her father."
Your heart skipped a beat. "Chaeyoung? What happened to her?"
He laughed bitterly. "She was placed in an orphanage and then into a new family. There was no record of her causing any trouble as she grew up. She was just a victim, like so many others."
You frowned, the pieces of the puzzle not quite fitting together in your mind. "So, she's not..."
Your father shook his head. "No, she's not involved. At least, that's what the records say. But we can't ignore the possibility that someone else is continuing her father's work."
You felt a surge of frustration. "But how do we find out who? There are no leads, no clues that point directly to anyone."
Your father's eyes narrowed. "There's always a clue, Y/N. You just have to know where to look."
You were about to respond when your phone buzzed again. It was Jaesung.
You answered, his voice urgent on the other end. "Y/N, we've got another body. Same M.O. This time, there's a witness who saw someone leaving the scene. A woman."
Your heart raced. "Where?"
Jaesung gave you the address, and you ended the call, turning to your father. "I have to go. There's been another murder, and a witness saw someone leaving."
Your father stood up, his expression resolute. "Be careful, Y/N. And remember, the truth is often hidden in plain sight."
You nodded, grabbing your coat and heading for the door. As you left your childhood home, the weight of the past and the urgency of the present pressed heavily on your shoulders.
You had to find the truth, no matter where it led. The pieces of the puzzle were slowly coming together, and you were determined to see it through to the end.
Arriving at the crime scene, you found Jaesung waiting for you, his face grim. "The witness is inside. She's shaken but coherent."
You followed him into the building, where a young woman sat, trembling but determined to help.
"I saw her," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "She was tall, with long black hair. She looked...angry."
A chill ran down your spine. The description matched Katarina, but you couldn't be sure. "Did you see her face?"
