5 years later

Five years later, life had settled into a peaceful routine. You and Chaeyoung had built a simple, happy life together, focusing on the little joys that each day brought.

Your son, named Jaesung in honor of your fallen friend but affectionately called Jae, was the light of your lives.

Jae was a curious and energetic five-year-old, always eager to hear stories, especially the one about his hero uncle who saved your family from a really bad woman.

He didn't fully understand the gravity of the story, but his eyes would light up with excitement every time you told it.

One evening, as the sun set and painted the sky in hues of orange and pink, you sat in the living room with Jae on your lap, a picture book open in front of you.

Chaeyoung was in the kitchen, humming a tune as she prepared dinner.

"Mommy, can you tell me the story about Uncle Jaesung again?" Jae asked, his big eyes looking up at you expectantly.

You smiled, ruffling his hair gently. "Of course, Jae. You know, Uncle Jaesung was a very brave man. He helped keep our family safe from a very bad woman who wanted to hurt us."

Jae's eyes widened with awe. "He was really brave, wasn't he?"

You nodded, your voice softening as you continued. "Yes, he was. He protected us because he loved us very much. And even though he's not here with us anymore, he's always watching over us."

Jae snuggled closer, absorbing every word. "I want to be brave like Uncle Jaesung when I grow up."

"You already are, my little hero," you said, kissing the top of his head. "And we'll always remember Uncle Jaesung for his bravery and love."

Chaeyoung walked in, wiping her hands on a towel, and joined you on the couch. "What story are we telling today?" she asked, even though she already knew.

"Uncle Jaesung!" Jae exclaimed, his excitement palpable.

Chaeyoung smiled, her eyes meeting yours with a shared understanding. "That's a great story. Uncle Jaesung was very special."

Jae began to grow tired, his eyelids drooping and his small body leaning heavily against yours.

His favorite toy, a worn-out stuffed lion, was clutched tightly in his hands.

"I don't wanna eat dinner, Mommy," he mumbled, barely able to keep his eyes open.

You smiled down at him, brushing a strand of hair from his face. "That's okay, sweetheart. We'll save it for later. It looks like someone's ready for bed."

Chaeyoung stood beside you, her eyes filled with warmth as she watched the scene unfold. "He had a big day. No wonder he's exhausted."

You nodded, carefully picking Jae up in your arms. He nestled his head against your shoulder, his toy lion still firmly in his grip.

As you walked down the hallway to his room, Chaeyoung followed, her presence a comforting reminder of the life you had built together.

Once in Jae's room, you gently laid him down on his bed. His small hand reached out instinctively, grabbing hold of the blanket as you pulled it up to his chin.

He was almost asleep, his breathing soft and even.

Chaeyoung stood at the foot of the bed, watching with a smile that spoke of quiet pride and contentment.

"He looks so peaceful," she whispered, as if afraid to disturb the calm.

You sat on the edge of the bed for a moment longer, just watching your son sleep, feeling the steady rhythm of his breathing.
