The room felt almost sacred in its quietude, the only sounds being the soft breaths of Jae as he slept in Chaeyoung's arms and the faint hum of the infirmary's fluorescent lights. You sat beside them, feeling the warmth of Chaeyoung's hand as she reached out to you.
Her fingers intertwined with yours, a silent gesture that spoke of the strength you both drew from each other.
For a long while, neither of you spoke. Words seemed unnecessary when the bond between you was so palpable, so real.
You simply sat there, watching over your son and the woman you loved, feeling a rare moment of peace settle over the three of you.
Finally, Chaeyoung broke the silence, her voice soft and a little hesitant. "I'm sorry you had to see me like this," she murmured, her eyes downcast.
"Don't be," you replied gently, giving her hand a reassuring squeeze. "You're the strongest person I know, Chaeyoung. What matters is that you're here, with us."
Chaeyoung's eyes met yours, filled with a mixture of vulnerability and gratitude. "I'm scared sometimes," she admitted quietly, her gaze dropping back to Jae, who was still nestled against her. "Scared that I won't be able to protect him. Or you."
You shifted closer, brushing a thumb along the back of her hand. "We protect each other," you said firmly. "You, me, Jae, we're in this together, always. We've been through hell, but we're still standing. And we'll keep standing, no matter what."
Chaeyoung smiled faintly, her grip on your hand tightening as she nodded. "I don't know what I'd do without you," she whispered.
"And you'll never have to find out," you promised, leaning in to press a tender kiss to her forehead. "We've got a life ahead of us, Chaeyoung. A future we're going to build together."
A tear slipped down Chaeyoung's cheek, but it wasn't out of sadness. It was the kind of tear that came when hope began to bloom again after a long, dark winter.
"I love you," she whispered, her voice cracking with emotion.
"I love you too," you replied, your voice thick with the same emotion. "More than anything."
Jae stirred a little in his sleep, his small hand grasping at Chaeyoung's shirt, as if even in his dreams he was seeking the comfort of his mother's presence.
You both watched him, your hearts swelling with love and protectiveness.
Eventually, you helped Chaeyoung settle back down on the bed, making sure she was comfortable and secure.
You turned back to her, noticing the exhaustion etched into her features, but also the determination that had never wavered.
"Why don't you rest a little?" you suggested softly. "I'll stay with Jae. You need to take care of yourself too."
Chaeyoung hesitated, her protective instincts kicking in, but she nodded. "Just for a little while," she agreed, her voice a murmur as she moved to the other bed in the room.
As she lay down, you pulled up a chair and held Jae in your arms, watching as Chaeyoung finally allowed herself to relax.
It didn't take long for her to drift off, her breathing becoming slow and steady as she succumbed to the sleep she so desperately needed.
Momo hesitated for a moment at the door, not wanting to disturb the peaceful scene before her.
The three of you, Jae nestled in your arms, you leaning back in the chair, and Chaeyoung resting quietly on the bed, looked so serene, a stark contrast to the chaos and tension that usually filled the days.
