Chaeyoung's eyes darted away from yours as you hung up the phone, clearly sensing the anger in your expression. She shrank back, her body tense with fear that you might yell at her as well.
You noticed her reaction and felt a pang of guilt. Slowly, you sat down beside her, trying to appear as calm as possible.
"Chaeyoung," you said softly, reaching out to take her hand. She flinched slightly but didn't pull away. "I'm not mad at you. You're the last person I'd be mad at right now."
Her eyes met yours, filled with uncertainty. "Really?"
You nodded, gently patting her stomach. "We're going to take good care of this child. I promise."
She looked down at your hand on her stomach, then back up at you, her expression softening. "But... what did she say? What's the truth?"
You took a deep breath, gathering your thoughts. "My mother, well, the woman I thought was my mother, she's not my biological mother. My real mother died when I was born. Your mother had an affair with her own brother, and you were the result. We're not related by blood, Chaeyoung. Not at all."
Chaeyoung's eyes widened in shock. "So, everything we've been told..."
"Was a lie," you finished for her. "We've both been living under lies. But now we know the truth. We're not siblings. We can be together, without any of those boundaries."
Tears welled up in Chaeyoung's eyes, and she threw her arms around you, burying her face in your chest. "I can't believe it," she whispered. "All this time, I thought..."
"I know," you murmured, holding her close. "But we have a future now. A real future, together. And we're going to make it work."
Chaeyoung pulled back slightly, looking up at you with a tentative smile. "You really mean that?"
"Of course," you said, wiping a tear from her cheek. "We'll figure this out. We'll take care of each other and our child. We're going to be okay."
The next morning, you reluctantly escorted Chaeyoung back to her cell. You had arranged for Dr. Georgina, an old acquaintance who had previously attended to prisoners, to check on her regularly.
Before you left, you reassured Chaeyoung that Georgina would be there to help with anything she needed.
After ensuring Chaeyoung was settled, you went to meet Jaesung. He was already at his desk, reviewing some files.
As you approached, he looked up, sensing the weight of what you were about to discuss.
"Jaesung," you began, your voice steady but heavy with the implications of what you had learned, "I need to talk to you about what I discovered yesterday."
He nodded, motioning for you to sit down. "I'm all ears."
You took a deep breath and recounted the conversation with your mother, the revelations about your true parentage, and the lies that had been fed to both you and Chaeyoung.
Jaesung listened intently, his expression growing more serious with each passing detail.
"So, Chaeyoung isn't your sister," he summarized once you finished. "She's your stepmother's daughter from an affair with her own brother."
"Exactly," you confirmed. "And they tried to make it look like I was somehow involved in this twisted family curse. It's as if they wanted me to believe I was a part of this mess, too."
Jaesung leaned back in his chair, rubbing his chin thoughtfully. "It's a complicated situation, but it seems clear that Chaeyoung was living under a burden of lies and manipulation. They were trying to drag you into it to keep the cycle going."
