The early morning air was cold and still as you walked Chaeyoung back to her cell. The prison was eerily quiet, the only sound being the faint hum of the fluorescent lights overhead. You glanced around, noting the new arrivals in the adjacent cells. Something about them felt off, a sense of unease settling in your stomach.
As you reached Chaeyoung's cell, you turned to her, your voice low and serious.
"Chaeyoung, I need you to be extra careful," you said, your eyes locking onto hers. "There are some new prisoners here, and they give me a bad feeling."
She nodded, her eyes reflecting your concern. "I noticed them too," she admitted. "I'll keep my guard up."
You took her hands in yours, squeezing them gently. "If you need anything, anything at all, don't hesitate to call me or Doctor Georgina, okay?"
"I will," she promised, her voice steady despite the situation. "I'll be fine, I promise."
You searched her eyes, wanting to believe her but unable to shake the worry gnawing at you.
"I wish I could stay with you," you said softly, your thumb brushing over her knuckles.
"I know," she replied, her voice equally soft. "But you can't. You need to be out there, taking care of Jae and keeping things going."
You nodded, feeling a lump form in your throat. "Just... be safe, Chaeyoung," you said, your voice barely above a whisper. "I can't lose you."
She gave you a small, reassuring smile. "You won't. I'll be careful, and I'll call if anything happens. I promise."
Before heading home to make breakfast for Jae, you found yourself driving towards the cemetery, the sky still tinged with the soft colors of dawn.
The roads were empty, allowing your mind to drift back to memories of Jaesung.
He had been more than just a partner, he had been a brother to you, someone who always had your back no matter how dark things got.
When you arrived, the cemetery was quiet, the early morning air still heavy with dew. You made your way to Jaesung's grave, the grass crunching softly under your feet.
His headstone was simple, yet it captured his essence, solid, dependable, and unassuming. You knelt down, brushing a few stray leaves off the stone.
"Hey, Jaesung," you murmured, your voice barely above a whisper. The words felt heavy in your throat, weighed down by the reality of his absence.
"I'm sorry I haven't been here much. Things have been... complicated." you added.
You let out a shaky breath, trying to steady yourself. "Chaeyoung and I, we're trying to build something normal out of all this mess. We named the kid after you, you know? Jae... He's a good kid, smart and curious. You would've loved him."
The wind rustled through the trees, and for a moment, it felt like he was there, listening.
You swallowed hard, pushing back the tears that threatened to fall. "I miss you, man. Every day. I keep thinking about that last moment, wishing I could've done something more. But you were always the brave one, weren't you? You saved us. You saved me."
You stayed there for a while, the silence of the cemetery comforting in a way.
Finally, you stood up, your hand resting on the top of the headstone. "I'm trying to be tough, like you always told me to be. But it's hard, Jaesung. It's so damn hard."
You took a deep breath, straightening your shoulders. "But I'm gonna keep going. For Jae, for Chaeyoung, for you. I won't let you down."
With one last lingering glance at the grave, you turned and walked back to your car, the weight on your chest feeling a little lighter.
