Weeks passed, and the day of Chaeyoung's court hearing arrived. The courtroom was packed with the families of her victims, members of the press, and curious onlookers. The atmosphere was thick with tension and anticipation.
You sat in the front row, your heart pounding as you waited for your turn to speak. When your name was called, you stood and approached the witness stand.
Chaeyoung sat a few feet away, her eyes downcast, the weight of her actions visibly heavy on her shoulders.
You took a deep breath, your voice steady as you began. "My name is Y/N, and I am here to speak about the murder of my father by the defendant, Son Chaeyoung."
Chaeyoung looked up at you, her eyes filled with a mixture of remorse and resignation. She had agreed to confess to everything, to take responsibility for her actions.
"As painful as it is," you continued, "I have to acknowledge that Chaeyoung did kill my father. She acted out of a deep-seated pain and a twisted sense of justice, driven by the trauma inflicted on her by her own father."
You paused, the emotions threatening to overwhelm you. "But over these past weeks, I have come to see another side of her. A side that wants to change, to atone for her actions. I believe that—"
Before you could finish, a man from the back of the courtroom lunged forward.
It was one of the victims' fathers, his face contorted with rage and grief.
He broke through the barriers and rushed at Chaeyoung, his fists flying.
"You monster!" he screamed, landing punches on her face and body. "You took my daughter! You deserve to die!"
Chaeyoung tried to shield herself, but the blows kept coming.
The courtroom erupted into chaos as officers and lawyers scrambled to intervene.
Without thinking, you rushed forward. "Stop! Get off her!" you shouted, pushing through the crowd.
You reached the man and pulled him away from Chaeyoung, delivering a hard punch to his face that knocked him down.
"That's enough!" you yelled, your voice echoing in the stunned silence that followed. The man lay on the floor, clutching his face, his rage replaced by shock.
You turned to Chaeyoung, who was bruised and shaken but alive. You knelt beside her, your hand on her shoulder. "Are you okay?"
She nodded weakly, her eyes filled with tears. "Why... why did you do that?"
"Because I believe in you," you said firmly. "And no matter what happens, I'm not going to let anyone hurt you."
The judge banged his gavel, calling for order in the court. "This court will not tolerate violence," he declared. "Everyone, please return to your seats."
You helped Chaeyoung to her feet and guided her back to her place.
As you resumed your position at the witness stand, you felt the weight of everyone's eyes on you. But you didn't care. You knew what you had to say.
"I believe in justice," you said, your voice strong. "But I also believe in redemption. Chaeyoung has done terrible things, but she is willing to face the consequences. She wants to change, and I believe she can."
You looked at Chaeyoung, seeing the gratitude and hope in her eyes. "I ask this court to consider not only the crimes she has committed but the person she is trying to become."
The judge nodded, his expression thoughtful. "Thank you, detective Y/N. We will take your testimony into consideration."
As you left the witness stand, you glanced back at Chaeyoung. She gave you a small, grateful smile.
