You walked into the dimly lit cell, noticing the door slightly ajar. At first, you brushed it off, thinking that Georgina might have forgotten to lock it after her last visit. But as you stepped inside, your gaze fell upon Chaeyoung. She was lying on the bed, her back to you, her shoulders subtly trembling.
"Chaeyoung?" you called softly, your voice filled with concern.
She turned her head slightly, her eyes red and swollen from crying. "Hey," she replied weakly, attempting a smile that didn't quite reach her eyes.
You approached her, sitting down on the edge of the bed. "Are you okay? Did something happen?"
She shook her head, wiping at her eyes. "Just... hormones, I guess. Everything feels overwhelming."
You took her hand, squeezing it gently. "You can talk to me, you know. You don't have to go through this alone."
She nodded but remained silent, her eyes avoiding yours. You could see the pain she was trying to hide, the fear lurking just beneath the surface.
"I know it's hard," you said softly, "but I'm here for you. We'll get through this together."
Chaeyoung looked at you then, her eyes searching yours. "I just want to protect you," she whispered, her voice trembling. "From everything."
You frowned, sensing there was more to her words. "Protect me from what?"
She hesitated, her eyes flickering with fear and uncertainty. "Just... everything that's out there. I don't want anything to happen to you."
You brushed a strand of hair away from her face, your touch gentle. "We'll be okay. We have each other, and that's all that matters."
Chaeyoung nodded, her eyes filling with tears again. She leaned into your touch, finding comfort in your presence.
"I love you," she whispered, her voice barely audible.
"I love you too," you replied, leaning down to kiss her forehead. "And we're going to be alright. I promise."
She closed her eyes, letting your words wash over her, soothing the turmoil inside.
For a moment, the world outside ceased to exist, leaving only the two of you in a cocoon of safety and love.
It was a small moment of peace in the midst of chaos, but it was enough to give her strength to face whatever lay ahead.
As you held her, you couldn't shake the feeling that there was something she wasn't telling you.
But you decided to let it go for now, focusing instead on the promise you made to each other.
Few days later
A few days later, your phone buzzed with an urgent call from Jaesung.
"We've got a vandalism report. The address is... it's Chaeyoung's old house," he said, his voice heavy with concern.
Your heart sank at the mention of the address. That house held dark memories, a place where Chaeyoung and her father committed unspeakable acts.
"I'll be there soon," you replied, grabbing your keys and heading out.
When you arrived, Jaesung was already on the scene with a couple of officers. The house, which had stood empty since Chaeyoung's confession, now looked like it had been through a war zone.
Furniture was torn apart, empty jars shattered across the floor, and the walls were smeared with spray paint.
"What the hell happened here?" you muttered, stepping over broken glass.
