✮unexpected

LAINEY WAS FAST ASLEEP ON THE GROUND. the group had been sitting there for hours, waiting for a tornado to pop up. she had a blanket wrapped around her body, soft snores leaving her lips. she was trying to get some peace before the storm.  suddenly someone shook her body, causing her to groan and roll over. kate stood above her, a big smile on her lips, "ready?" 

lainey blinked, "no."

kate laughed, "come on, get up."

lainey slowly got up, taking pieces of grass out of her hair. she sat on the ground, looking around at everyone, who was very excited for this tornado. "are you sure you're recording, i don't see a red light." kate asked her boyfriend, who held a camera in his hands. lainey groaned, what has she gotten herself into. she got up, grabbing the blanket off the ground. she threw the blanket in the van, standing by addy. "okay, blah." kate laughed, "don't make me laugh, stop it." kate cleared her throat, "today, our science team from the tornado tamer project is out in the field... about to chase the storm southwest of us." 

lainey ignored her sister, rolling her eyes. she sat down on the ground, looking at the storm that was appearing. her breathing sped up as she continued to look at it. what if everything went wrong? what if she lost her sister and her best friend? lainey looked back at addy and kate, the two of them talking to the camera. she shook her head again, she wanted to go home. 

anxiety and fear was lainey's two worst qualities. she was meds for anxiety, but they barely worked. living in oklahoma just completely scared lainey, and she was so ready to move. "come on lainey!" addy called out from the van, making lainey shut her eyes. here goes nothing. lainey stood up, wiping the straw off her legs. "get in, get in, get in!" 

lainey looked at the group as kate held the camera. "you know what today is?" kate asked as jeb grabbed lainey, pulling her in the camera view.

"the day we tame a tornado!" everyone yelled back, making lainey look at them with wide eyes. jeb shook his head at lainey, a smile on his face. they began to holler and scream, making lainey shake her head and walk over behind the camera. 

"we are so fucked." lainey mumbled.

LAINEY AND JAVI SAT IN THE VAN QUIETLY. they both didn't know each other well, and lainey was not in the mood for talking. she picked at her nails as she looked at the car in front of the van that held all of lainey's friends. she also looked at the storm they were driving straight for. she bit her lip nervously, tapping her foot on the ground. javi was eating chips, which he held one out for lainey, but she declined, looking back out of the window.

he began to sing along to the song, making lainey shake her head. how could anyone be so calm about this? tornados killed people- they weren't some national park for people to mess around with. she suddenly got a phone call, making her look down, it was her mother. "hey mom." lainey stated, clicking her tongue in nervousness.

"hey sweetheart, you with your sister?" 

lainey snorted, "going inside a tornado? no thanks." her mother laughed, "i'm watching from afar."

"okay, be careful."

"will do. bye."

lainey put down her phone on her lap, tapping her foot nervously. "alright how are we getting to this thing?" javi asked in the walkie talkie, "i need a southwest position for the sensors." 

"yeah coming right up."

lainey shut her eyes, this was such a bad idea. she wanted to go home. she ran her hand through her hair before putting it back into a bun. she looked back at the storm, her heart rate increasing. usually lainey would just freak out and go in her room, her safe space, but now she was miles away from her home. it began to rain, making lainey scrunch up her face, "can you just take me home?" lainey asked javi, making him look at her, "this is a bad idea."

"you'll be fine." 

lainey swallowed back tears, looking back outside. they found a good spot for lainey and javi to set up, but lainey just sat in the car. she watched as the rain hit the window like she was in a trance. everyone was outside getting the barrels ready, but lainey just sat there in fear. she tried to tell herself that she wasn't going near the tornado, but her mind wouldn't let it go.

kate walked up to the car, knocking on the window, "you sure you don't want to come with us?" she asked, making lainey go wide eyed. 

"hell no!" lainey exclaimed, "you have fun."

kate laughed, "i will. bye!" 

she practically skipped away from the van, making lainey stare at her. she hoped it wouldn't be the last time she saw her sister. javi got back in the back of the van, looking at his computer. lainey took a breath, unbuckling her seatbelt. she got out of the van, staring at the storm her sister was heading into.  "dorthy's coming in live and clear!" javi spoke to the walkie talkie. 

lainey rubbed her hand along her face, watching from afar. "we dropped the trailer javi!" kate said into the walkie talkie.

"okay lets see if it takes the bait." javi replied, chewing on his snack. "woah baby! we just shot up 10,000 feet!"

lainey started to pace, her hands on her hips. she could hear javi keep talking to them, but she ignored it. she watched as the storm began to get bigger, making her eyes go wide. kate's experiment wasn't working. she looked back at javi, who was looking at her.  "nah, nah, nah, this can't be." javi mumbled making lainey run over to him. 

"javi! talk to us!" addy yelled in the walkie as javi looked at lainey.

"it says it just shot 70,000 feet." lainey almost puked. "guys whatever's in there is big, its big and its moving fast, drive!" lainey looked back the storm, her eyes wide. she began to pace back and forth, when she said they'll all die, she was just joking!

lainey grabbed the walkie, "kate! talk to me!" she screamed, but there was no answer, "addy! someone talk to me!" tears filled her eyes as no one answered her calls. "please." she whispered, "please!"

there was nothing.
