LAINEY SAT AT THE TABLE, PICKING AT HER FOOD. tyler sat next to her, talking to everyone about storm chasing. for some reason, lainey wasn't hungry. she sat with her fork in one hand and looked around at everyone eating. she felt sick. maybe it was because she was home and all the memories came back to her.

lainey tried to pay attention in the convo, she really did. but she couldn't stop the tears coming to her eyes. she's been through so much the past few days, it was all crashing down on her. she had no idea what was going on between her and tyler. she survived a goddamn tornado. usually this stuff wouldn't get to her- but she couldnt help her leg shaking and tears welling up in her eyes.

"see, lainey was the complete opposite-" her mother stated, looking at the girl. lainey looked up at her mother, a fake smile plastered on her face. "lainey hid in her closet anytime there was a storm."

lainey rolled her eyes, "gee thanks."

cathy smiled, "i remember it was storming pretty bad and kate was sitting by the windows, watching, and lainey was bawling in the bathroom screaming there was a tornado-"

"mom, we don't need to share that at all." lainey mumbled, not even bothering to look at tyler, knowing a big smile was on his face. "that's in the past, i'm a new woman."

the woman rolled her eyes, "i don't know how you turned into a reckless person, it scares me sometimes." lainey looked back down at her food, she couldn't imagine her mother losing her children. they continued their conversation, and lainey tried to listen. everything in her body wanted to just collapse.

"you know when you love something, you'll spend your whole life trying to understand it." tyler said, snapping lainey out of her thoughts. she looked back at him, the two of them giving a small smile to each other.

"you know, katie was studying for her phd." cathy said, "i keep telling her to come back and finish it-"

"okay mom." kate interrupted.

"she had a big study with her friends, disrupting tornado dynamics." kate immediately stood up, making lainey look back down at her plate. lainey stood up after her sister, running her hand through her hair. she gave her mom a look before following kate inside, but she didn't follow kate to talk to her.

lainey went into her room and shut the door, tears running down her face. she sat down on her bed, looking at the picture of her and addy. they weren't friends for long, and addy was a few years older than lainey- but they were inseparable. lainey and addy were the brains, they did almost everything together.
