Noah had fully recovered after five days of rest, his usual vibrant energy now restored. As the sun began to set, the kitchen was filled with the warm glow of the evening light. May was busy at the stove, concentrating hard on a new recipe she had decided to try. The smell of spices filled the air, mingling with the sound of sizzling vegetables.
Noah, feeling mischievous, leaned against the counter with a playful grin.
" Are you sure you're not trying to poison us with that?" he teased, his eyes twinkling.
May shot him a mock glare, her lips twitching with the effort to suppress a smile. "Oh, hush. It’s going to be great. Just you wait."
Unable to resist, Noah sneaked up behind her and deftly dabbed a bit of sauce on her nose. "There, a little extra flavor," he said, laughing.
May gasped in surprise and then laughed too, wiping her nose with the back of her hand. "You’re such a ...... She sighed.
The two continued to banter and laugh, the kitchen filled with their playful energy.
Upstairs, Ian finished his spell practice, feeling the familiar pull of exhaustion, He descended the stairs, drawn by the sound of laughter. As he entered the kitchen, he saw Noah and May, their faces lit up with genuine happiness.But as Ian watched them, a sharp pang pierced his chest again. He stood frozen, trying to decipher the source of the discomfort. It wasn't anger or jealousy exactly, but something more complex, something he couldn’t quite name. He had always valued his friendship with May, but seeing her like this stirred an unfamiliar feeling within him.
