It was another pleasant day at Hanil Foreign Language High School. Hyun Woo and Dal-po were in a particularly buoyant mood that afternoon as they strolled towards the school cafeteria albeit a little late compared to their peers since they had just finished running an errand for Mrs Han.
The upcoming Math Olympiad was a hot topic of conversation between the pair, their shared enthusiasm for the challenge filling them with a sense of camaraderie and excitement. Their conversation flowed effortlessly as they discussed strategy and tactics, a topic that would undoubtedly send Yang-gi into a fit of boredom if he were with them.
But the cheerful atmosphere abruptly dissipated as they rounded a corner. Their eyes landed on Pil-sook, her usual graceful gait replaced by a frantic hobble. She was limping awkwardly, taking three steps to the right, then three steps to the side, her face a mask of panic. Before they could react, she stumbled, her foot caught in her shoelace.
Dal-po's protective instincts kicked in, his long legs carrying him to her side in seconds. He caught her by the elbow, effectively preventing a nasty fall as he steadied her. Dal-po's concern was evident as he assessed her condition.
"Pil-sook ssi, gwenchanayo?" he asked, his voice steady despite the rising alarm in his eyes. His gaze fell to her knee, and his eyes widened a fraction. "You're bleeding," he noted grimly.
By then, Hyun Woo had caught up with them, his own worry evident. "Pil-sook ssi, what happened?" he asked, his voice gentle.
Instead of answering, Pil-Sook hesitated, her eyes darting between the two boys fearfully. Subconsciously, Dal-po tightened his grip on her, his lips pressed together in worry. He didn't like that Pil-sook was hurt nor did he like seeing her so terrified.
"Sunbaenim..." she began, her lower lip trembling. Her words were broken and fragmented, but the gist of her message was clear. "H-Hae-in...she she...S-Some girls d-dragged her to the pool."
Hyun Woo's face hardened alarmingly. Some may even say he looked incredibly scary at the moment. He exchanged a swift, silent glance with Dal-po, who nodded in understanding.
(Same vibes!)
Without another word, Hyun Woo turned and sprinted off in the direction of the pool. His heart pounded in his chest as a wave of cold dread washed over him. A million terrifying possibilities raced through his mind and he couldn't help but imagine the worst.
He could feel it in his gut. Something was terribly wrong...He had to get to Hae-in, and he had to get there fast.
The vastness of the campus seemed to stretch endlessly, each passing second an eternity. Hyun Woo was half-cursing the campus for being so big as he ran. After what felt like aeons, he burst through the double doors leading to the pool area.
A wave of relief washed over him when he spotted the school pool, but that quickly dissipated when his gaze landed on the disturbing scene unfolding before him. A group of girls, their faces contorted with malicious glee, were surrounding a smaller figure, their hands pushing and shoving with reckless abandon. His heart sank when he realised it was Hae-in.
