"Yedeul-ah, I need everyone onboard in the next five minutes or the bus will leave without you," Mrs Han called out, her voice carrying over the bustling crowd of chattering students. "Class 2A, you're on Bus 1. Class 3A, you're with me on Bus 2."
A scattered chorus of "Yes, Mrs Han," followed, as the students slowly shuffled toward the buses, which would soon whisk them away to the National Museum of Korea for their annual cultural field trip.
There were a total of six coaches heading from Hanil High to the Yongsan District where the museum was, of which four had already left. More specifically, their juniors from Classes 1A and 1B, along with their peers from Classes 2B and 3B, had already departed, leaving Mrs Han and her husband, Mr Jin, to usher their classes onto the last two buses.
Clipboard in hand, Mrs Han was currently checking off each student as they boarded, ensuring everyone was accounted for.
Meanwhile, Mr Jin was doing the same though his eyes would occasionally drift over to Mrs Han. Each time their eyes met, he broke into a dopey smile, clearly still smitten with his wife of three years. His distracted glances didn't go unnoticed by Mrs Han, who shook her head with an amused sigh, trying to keep the faint smile off her face.
Unfortunately, their little moments were not without consequences, for they left just enough room for a bit of chaos.
Neither of them noticed when two of their students decided to pull a little switcheroo which they would later claim that they had gotten on the wrong bus.
Hae-in was seated by the window in the back row, earphones in and her gaze lingering on the trees near their school gates, when the seat beside her dipped. Fully expecting Pil-sook, she nearly did a double take when she saw her tall, athletic boyfriend sliding in next to her.
She had clearly heard Mrs Han's instructions. He wasn't supposed to be here.
"Baek Hyun Woo!" she hissed, tugging her earphones out, a mix of disbelief and exasperation flashing across her face. "What are you doing here? You're supposed to be on Bus 2!"
Hyun Woo didn't answer. Instead, he pressed a finger to his lips, signaling her to stay quiet as he tugged the hood of his sweatshirt over his head and slouched down in his seat, his face nearly obscured by the cloth.
Still bewildered, Hae-in glanced around to see if any of her classmates had noticed the stowaway that was her boyfriend, but they were thankfully lost in their conversations. With that, she turned back to Hyun Woo, only to see him with his eyes shut tightly, visibly feigning sleep though the faint smile tugging his lips did not go unnoticed by her.
Just then, Mr Jin climbed aboard. "Has everyone boarded?" he asked loudly.
A chorus of "yes" rose from the bus, and Mr Jin did a quick headcount before nodding in satisfaction.
It wasn't long before the bus was heading towards the highway which would eventually bring them to the museum. Only then did Hyun Woo lower his hood and straighten in his seat. Then, to Hae-in's mild horror, he raised his hand.
