With the school break over, Hanil High was swept into a whirlwind of study sessions. Students of all levels were counting down the days to the exam season, especially the seniors whose lives were consumed by intensive study marathons in preparation for the looming suneung. Because of that, Hae-in and Pil-sook rarely spent recess with the boys these days.

It didn't matter though. They were busy studying too.

Currently, Hae-in and Pil-sook were perched on the bench with their noses buried in their textbooks when a group of girls sauntered over.

Pil-sook froze. Her wide eyes darted toward the approaching figures, and a tremor ran through her frame. Despite the fear that clawed at her, she remained seated, driven by a fierce loyalty to Hae-in.

Hae-in, however, barely concealed her irritation. Her pencil paused mid-note, and she let out a heavy sigh.

These girls again?

These girls again?

Haven't they grown bored of tormenting her?

After not seeing them for months, Hae-in thought they had moved on, but apparently, she was wrong.

The group stopped in front of them, their presence casting a shadow over the bench.

"Hey, pipsqueak, are you going to hide behind her forever?" the tallest girl sneered, her gaze locking onto Pil-sook. Her tone dripped with derision, her words deliberately sharp.

Another chimed in, her voice mocking and high-pitched. "Does she even talk, or is she your personal pet now?"

The third bully laughed, a cruel, biting sound. "What's the matter, Hae-in? Too busy studying to teach your little sidekick some manners? Or are you both just losers together?"

Their words swirled around them like a dark cloud, every syllable designed to put them down. Pil-sook shrank further into herself, clutching her notebook as though it were a shield. Beside her, Hae-in's jaw tightened as she tried to fight to urge to punch them for saying those mean things to Pil-sook.

It was one thing for them to throw those horrid verbal remarks at her, but it was an entirely different matter when they turned their threats toward the people she cared about.
