Kaira's POV
Ritika and I were driving back to our apartment after lunch, the sun setting in the distance, casting a warm, golden glow over the city. We chatted about everything and nothing, enjoying each other's company and the sense of normalcy it brought.
"Did you see the look on that waiter's face when you asked for extra chili?" Ritika laughed, shaking her head.
I grinned, feeling lighter than I had in days. "I don't think he expected anyone to handle that much spice."
As we approached a quieter part of town, Ritika suddenly grew silent. I glanced at her and noticed her eyes fixed on the rearview mirror.
"What's wrong?" I asked, a knot of worry forming in my stomach.
"I think we're being followed," she said, her voice tense. "Three cars have been behind us for the past few blocks."
I glanced in the mirror and saw the cars she was talking about. "Maybe they're just going the same way," I suggested, trying to keep my voice calm.
Ritika shook her head. "I don't think so, Kaira. They're too close, and they're not trying to pass us."
A chill ran down my spine, and I pressed my foot down on the accelerator, increasing our speed. Ritika fumbled with her phone, her fingers trembling as she dialed the police.
Just as she was about to speak, the first shot rang out. The sound of bullets hitting the car made us both scream in terror. I swerved, trying to keep control of the vehicle.
"Oh my God, they're shooting at us!" Ritika shouted, her voice filled with panic.
"Hold on!" I yelled, pressing the pedal to the floor. The car sped up, but the attackers matched our pace, their bullets shattering the rear window.
Ritika's hands were shaking so much she could barely hold her phone. In her panic, she accidentally called Varun instead of the police. The phone rang twice before he picked up.
"Ritika, what's going on?" Varun's voice was calm but laced with concern.
"We're under attack!" Ritika screamed. "They're shooting at us, Varun! We don't know what to do!"
Varun's voice became sharp and commanding. "Where are you? Give me your location now."
Ritika struggled to relay our location, her voice shaking. "We're on the highway near the old warehouse district."
I heard Rishav's voice in the background. "What's happening?"
"Ritika and Kaira are under attack," Varun said urgently. "We need to get to them now."
Hearing Rishav's voice broke something inside me, and I started to cry, my tears blurring my vision. But I couldn't afford to lose control. I wiped my eyes, forcing myself to focus on the road.
"Hold on, Kaira. We're coming for you," Rishav's voice was a lifeline in the chaos.
Ritika reached over and squeezed my hand. "Just keep driving, Kaira. They'll find us."
I nodded, my knuckles white on the steering wheel. "I won't let them get us," I promised, more to myself than to Ritika.
The car swerved and skidded as I maneuvered through traffic, the attackers relentless in their pursuit. I glanced at Ritika, her face pale with fear, her phone clutched tightly in her hand. The sound of gunfire was deafening, each bullet a reminder of how close we were to losing everything.
Suddenly, one of the attackers' cars pulled up alongside us, a man leaning out the window with a gun aimed directly at us. I jerked the wheel to the right, narrowly avoiding the barrage of bullets that followed. The car lurched, and I fought to keep it steady, my heart pounding in my chest.
"We can't keep this up," Ritika whispered, her voice barely audible over the chaos.
"Just a little longer," I replied, my voice determined. "They'll be here soon."
As if on cue, I saw the headlights of Varun's and Rishav's cars approaching fast. Relief flooded through me, but I knew we weren't safe yet. The attackers wouldn't give up that easily.
Varun's car sped past us, cutting off one of the attackers' vehicles and forcing it to swerve off the road. Rishav's car pulled up alongside ours, matching our speed. I glanced over and saw him, his eyes locked on mine, a fierce determination in his gaze.
"Stay close," he mouthed, and I nodded, doing my best to keep our cars aligned.
Varun's men quickly surrounded the other attackers' vehicles, their guns drawn. The sound of gunfire filled the air as they exchanged shots, the night illuminated by the flashes of muzzle fire. The attackers' cars were forced to a halt, their drivers dragged out and subdued by Varun's men.
I pulled the car over, my body trembling with the aftermath of fear and adrenaline. Rishav was at my door in an instant, pulling me out and into his arms.
"It's okay, you're safe now," he murmured, his voice soothing.
I clung to him, my tears soaking his shirt. "I was so scared, Rishav. I thought we were going to die."
He held me tighter, his own voice thick with emotion. "I won't let anything happen to you, Kaira. You're safe with me."
Varun checked on Ritika, who was shaken but unharmed. "Are you okay?" he asked gently.
She nodded, her eyes wide. "I think so. Thank you for coming so fast."
Varun gave her a reassuring smile. "We'll always come for you. Both of you."
As the adrenaline began to fade, I felt a deep exhaustion settle over me. But through it all, one thing was clear: I was grateful for Rishav and Varun. No matter how dangerous their world was, they would always protect us. And that was enough for now.
Author's POV:-
Later that evening, Varun and Rishav found themselves alone in the study, discussing the attack. Varun paced the room, his concern for Kaira evident in every line of his face.
"Who could have done this?" Varun muttered, running a hand through his hair.
Rishav, leaning against the desk, was equally tense. "I've got my men looking into it. We'll find out soon enough."
Varun sighed, rubbing his temples. "This shouldn't have happened. Kaira and Ritika should never have been put in danger."
Rishav's eyes softened. "We'll protect them, Varun. They won't be harmed."
Varun studied Rishav for a moment, a curious expression on his face. "You were really distracted out there, Rishav. I've never seen you like this."
Rishav straightened, trying to mask his unease. "Just concerned about Kaira and Ritika, that's all."
Varun smirked, a teasing glint in his eye. "So,Now tell me who is the girl who has stolen the heart of the ruthless mafia lord?"
Rishav's eyes widened, and he quickly looked away. "There's no girl, Varun. You're imagining things."
Varun laughed, clapping Rishav on the shoulder. "Sure, sure. But if there ever is, I want to meet her. Anyone who can make you lose your cool must be something special."
Rishav forced a chuckle, his mind racing. He couldn't tell Varun that it was his little sister who had stolen his heart. Not yet, anyway. He wasn't sure how Varun would react, and the last thing he wanted was to jeopardize his relationship with Kaira.
As they continued to discuss their next steps, Rishav couldn't help but think about Kaira. She had become his weakness, and he would do anything to keep her safe. No matter the cost
