When dad left the Principal introduced me to Miss Da Vinco who was apparently my geography teacher and since it was time for the geography lesson l walked with her to class and boy was l nervous.
The teacher looked sweet and she even treated me kindly but one thing l had learnt so far is that looks can be deceiving ,so l couldn't trust her kind nature until l got to know her.
"Class meet the new student " l didn't even notice we had reached the class until l noticed people staring at me.
"Introduce yourself " the teacher said looking at me expectantly and l nodded looking back at the students "
"Hi l am Rosabella De-Luca" l said softly and l heard gasps throughout the whole class.
"So you're not a myth" a boy said but l didn't notice which one.
"What" l said because l didn't understand what he meant.
"What he means is that we've all heard about the De-Luca princess but we've never met her or seen her anywhere " another girl said but l honestly didn't have an answer to what she said. When the teacher noticed l wasn't going to answer she directed me to go and sit near some girl called Cora.
Cora was a black girl who was as short as l am and the best part is that she greeted me kindly and she wasn't staring at me like l was an alien or one of the wonders of the world.
"Don't mind them" she whispered at me and l smiled at her in appreciation.
"l just don't like stares and being the center of attention " l whispered back and she looked at me strangely.
"You're the first upperclass person to talk to me kindly " she said smiling widely at me and l frowned.
"Upperclass"
"Yeah l mean rich and famous parents " she said looking at me like she didn't understand me but l was lost. Upperclass really.
"Well since my dad is the rich and famous one then l suppose am not Upperclass " l said to her and she laughed.
"You don't get it yet but you will sooner or later " she said but before l could reply back to her the teacher told us to settle down.
The lesson went on for an hour and when a bell rang everyone started taking their books and bags while l watched on confused by Cora held my hand.
"It's time for the next lesson "she said pulling me along and l followed her like a lost puppy. On the way l noticed the strange looks people were giving me.
"Why is everyone looking at me strangely Cora" l asked when we settled in another class for our English lesson and Cora looked at me exclamation.
"Girl your father is like a world wonder and you don't know " she said looking at me wide eyed.
"But it's uncomfortable " l said looking around.
"You better get used to it" she said deadpan and l laughed.
"Can you be my friend " l said
"You do know that we don't belong to the same class right and forget upper class you're basically royalty " she whispered to me looking around like she didn't want people to hear us but l didn't get what the big deal was.
"So"
"So you have to hang out with the Upperclass students not scholarship students like myself and what's worse is that your father's company is the one that gave me my scholarship " she murmured.
"None of that bothers me Cora and am glad dad's company gave you a scholarship because a lot of people struggle to go to good schools because of their parent's financial situation but they basically gave you a chance" l said smiling at her.
"You're different than the rest" she said hugging me and l laughed.
l just made a friend.....
The strange looks continued the whole time and at lunch l was exhausted at having to hide my head so that people couldn't see me.
When we reached the cafeteria Cora introduced me to her friends Sergio and Mallory who were just as kind as she is but Mallory couldn't get over the fact that l was 'The" De Luca princess and l was sitting at their table.
"God l still can't believe that we've not only met the De Luca princess but she's also sitting right next to us" she said fanning herself and we laughed at her craziness.
"Chill dude" Sergio said in an American accent.
"Uhm are you seeing what am seeing " she said poking his face.
There was some sort of chemistry brewing between these two and you could feel it.
Sergio couldn't keep his eyes of Mallory and she hanged on to every word he said.
"Yeah dude chill" l said holding her hand.
"That's how it's done Sergio, not your horse accent " Cora said to him.
"l've lived in America so l've grown used to the accent " l said looking at him assuring so he wouldn't feel bad about what Cora said.
"Well, woes of being rich right? You get to travel around the world and learn languages and accents " he murmured angrily and everyone kept quiet.
"Geez am joking " he said looking at our shocked faces but l couldn't help but wonder if he was serious.
People have a tendency to judge you based on your financial background. If you're rich then your whole life is rainbows and sunshine and if you're poor then you're miserable but then how can you judge if you're watching from the window because you don't know what goes on in closed doors.
"It was just heartbreaking to see Alexa fall from grace though "Mallory said and l looked at her in question. l haven't heard from Alexa since the day she left though she does speak to my brothers. l just didn't want to contact her after unintentionally taking away what was once hers.
"Alexa still attends school here" l asked.
"Yeah but ever since people heard about you nobody gives a damn about her" Mallory shrugged but l wanted to know more because l know how much she valued being the De Luca princess and all.
"What do you mean "
"Have you been living under a rock" Sergio asked looking at me strangely.
"Umm what do you mean" l said looking at him in wonder.
"Your way of speaking and your behavior all in all" he said.
"l have to agree with Sergio on this one Rosabella, you don't know a thing about high school or the society for that matter and to make it worse you're oblivious and naive" Cora added.
"Yeah girl you must have been a sheltered princess" Mallory said holding my hand reassuringly but l couldn't help but wonder what they thought l was.
Before they could but in with their opinions further l took my bag and headed to the passageway we used when coming here.
'Sheltered princess' yeah right ,these people don't know a single thing about who l am or what l have been through, it annoys me how they think they know me considering they don't know anything about me and they wouldn't survive a day through what l've survived.
