[Third-person POV]
"Anyway, you don't have her in front of you, and it's impossible for her to have the dragons; I don't trust Jorah's words," Eddard said calmly.
"No, damn the gods, a Pentoshi cheese merchant kept her safe along with her brother in his lands, surrounded them with eunuchs in pointy hats, and now she has escaped and they have warriors at their disposal to start a war in Westeros. I should have killed them both years ago; it would have been simple, but Jon was just like you. Idiot me for listening to him," Robert said, disgusted by his past decision.
"Jon Arryn was a wise man and a good Hand," Eddard said, remembering the old man.
"It's said that this King killed the Khal of the Dothraki and now has a horde of a hundred thousand men at his disposal. What do you think Jon would make of that?" Robert asked after calming his anger.
"He would say that not even a million Dothraki represent a threat to the realm while they are on the other side of the Narrow Sea," Eddard said, unafraid of the prospect of a battle against men without armor, finishing with, "The barbarians have no ships. And they don't like the open sea; it terrifies them."
"Maybe. But ships can be acquired in the Free Cities. I don't like this marriage, Ned. In the Seven Kingdoms, there are still those who call me Usurper. Have you already forgotten how many houses fought alongside the Targaryens in the war? For now, they are just waiting for their opportunity, but if they had the slightest chance, they would kill me in my sleep, and my children too. If the Beggar King is supported by this king of Meereen and crosses the sea with a Dothraki horde, those traitors will join him," Robert said with a clenched fist.
"He won't cross it. And if he dares to, we'll throw him back into the sea. Once you choose the new Warden of the East..." Eddard said, trying to pry information about who would be chosen as the Warden.
"For the last time, I am not naming Arryn's son as Warden. I know he's your nephew, but as long as there is a Targaryen mating with an unknown king and the Beggar King with a son in my lands, I would have to be mad to put a quarter of the realm in the hands of a sickly child," Robert declared, unambiguously stating his decision.
"The fact is that we need a Warden of the East. If you don't want Robert Arryn, appoint one of your brothers. Stannis proved his worth during the siege of Storm's End. That is, if you haven't promised that honor to anyone else," Eddard said, noticing Robert's discomfort when discussing the matter.
"And if I have, what then?" Robert said with a bitter tone.
"It's about Jaime Lannister, isn't it?" Eddard asked, voicing what he already feared.
"Yes," Robert confirmed.
"The Kingslayer. He is a very capable and brave man, but his father is the Warden of the West, Robert. In time, Jaime will inherit that honor. No one should control both the East and the West at the same time," Eddard said with concern.
"I'll fight that battle when the enemy presents itself. For now, Lord Tywin remains at Casterly Rock and seems determined to live a thousand years, so I highly doubt Jaime will inherit anything in the short term. Don't bother me with this, Ned; I've made a decision," Robert ended the matter with a frown.
"May I speak frankly, Your Grace?" Eddard asked.
"Apparently, there's no way to stop you," Robert said sarcastically, allowing him to continue.
