I just wanted to be in a rage room right now, but I'm in therapy
Thoughts swirled in Bekati's head as she sat in the all too familiar room. Waiting on Ms Song felt like a chore, as she rapidly shook her leg. She truly didn't feel like saying anything today. But here she was. School was around the corner. They had just gotten back from their MARVELOUS vacation on a Caribbean island she thinks began with a 'B'. Or was it a T? She shook her head. It always confused her, which one came first. They literally came back to this cold-ass state two days ago, and here they were, in a 'mandatory meeting' to kick the year off well. She held her scoff back at the thought. That was good judgment, too. Ms. Song re-entered the room and shut the door, handing Bekati a Zero-Sprite, as requested.
"Thank you," Bekati muttered and twisted off the cap, taking her first sip.
"You're welcome... if I may ask, what's so good about that one?" Ms Song put a playful smile on.
"It's less abrasive on my throat," she responded, putting the drink down. It wasn't a lie.
Ms. Song nodded and retrieved her book. Bekati was glad she didn't make the 'best you do lemon water because that's what it tastes like,' comment as others do. Maybe it was just because that's what Ms Song is like as a person or because that's in her profession's ethics.
"Ok, so... Enjoyed vacation?"
"Yeah, I got a tan. I think my freckles are popping more." Bekati tapped on her cheeks with a slight smile. "I think Anya does too. She spent more time outside than me. Still had a great time, though."
"That's great, Bekati. I'm glad you did." Ms. Song made sure to jot that down.
She continued with questions about that emotion and encounters and etched ways to add questions about school reopening. Of course, she got the typical young adult going 'ugh. school.' response. She just chuckled it away internally. She finally got into the segue of Bekati's personal life. Bekati knew how therapists tended to pull small related questions in different topics until they wound up on the subject they truly wanna get down to, and honestly 'it was the smoothest shit I've ever seen.'
"ok, and your roommate? Devena?" Ms. Song rested her elbow on her crossed legs and then her chin on her fist.
"Deven. I thought it was that, too. Yeah, she's amazing. She's the golden retriever, and I'm surprisingly the black cat in our friendship."
"I can see that dynamic still working well for you." Ms Song chuckled. "What's she like?"
"Oh, yeah. I never told you. Nice brown skin, and a beautiful smile that compliments her optimistic personality. Her hair is as curly as mine. Some portions may be a bit coilier. she's so fit too... a good workout partner." She slowed down and began to pick at her nails.
"What's wrong? Is that a bad thing?" Ms' song leaned forward.
"No. I just feel guilty about our last encounter when I was leaving the dorm for our Christmas break. I hope she doesn't hold anything against me. I kinda exploded for a second." Bekati explained the situation, not looking at her Mum's therapist as much.
"Ok, can I ask, were you taking the medication?"
She still didn't look directly at Ms Song.
"Yeah... but they didn't help a lot this semester." Bekati kept her answer low and vague.
"Is that why you requested a change?" Ms Song pressed on.
Bekati nodded her head and ran her hands over her curls.
"Ok, I'm not judging you for that Bekati. I just need us to remember that we need transparency. And I just need you to tell me when you're not feeling safe with anything. I've worked with you for about five years now. I've been seeing cues of you closing up."
