I stood outside the observation room, my eyes fixed on Eva's peaceful face as she lay unconscious on the hospital bed. The beeping of the machines and the soft whispers of the medical staff created a sense of calm, but my mind was racing with worry and concern.

Just then, my phone buzzed in my pocket, breaking the silence. I hesitated for a moment before answering, not wanting to disturb Eva's rest. But something told me I needed to take this call.

"Hello?" I said, my voice was low and cautious.

"Joshua, it's me," my friend's voice came through the line, laced with a mix of emotions. "I found out who started the rumors."

My grip on the phone tightened, my heart racing with anticipation. "Who is it?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.

There was a pause on the other end of the line, followed by a deep sigh. "It's Jamie, Eva's best friend."

I felt like I'd been punched in the gut, the air sucked out of me. "Jamie?" I repeated, my voice laced with disbelief and anger. "How could she do that to Eva?"

My friend's voice was steady and convincing as he listed the evidence he had gathered. "Firstly, you told me that Eva had a pregnancy test in her bedroom, and Eva even knew about it. That already raises suspicions about Jamie's involvement."

I nodded, even though he couldn't see me. That had been a red flag from the start.

"Secondly, Jamie is the only person closest to Eva. The only person who knows about you and Eva's fling," my friend continued. "She had the motive and the means to spread the rumor."

I clenched my fists, feeling a surge of anger towards Jamie. How could she betray Eva's trust like this?

"Thirdly, while I was checking through the students and asked them about who told them about this rumor, they all mentioned Jamie's name," my friend said, his voice dripping with conviction. "It's clear that Jamie was the one who started this rumor and spread it around school."

I took a deep breath, trying to process the evidence. It all pointed to Jamie's guilt, and I couldn't deny it anymore. Eva's best friend had betrayed her in the worst possible way.

My eyes widened in shock as my friend revealed the fourth proof. "And I hacked Jamie's phone, to look around her chats and she was talking about it with her boyfriend," he said, his voice low and serious.

I felt a wave of anger wash over me, knowing that Jamie had not only betrayed Eva's trust but had also involved her boyfriend in the scheme. It was a clear conspiracy to hurt Eva, and I couldn't let it slide.

I looked at Eva, who lay peacefully on the hospital bed, oblivious to the drama unfolding around her. The beeping of the machines and the soft hum of the IV pump created a soothing melody, but my mind was racing with thoughts of confrontation and justice.

"Painkillers and an IV," I whispered to myself, my eyes fixed on Eva's frail form. She was fighting for her health, and I was fighting for her reputation. I couldn't let Jamie get away with this.

"What did the chats say?" I asked my friend, my voice firm and resolute.

My friend's voice came through the phone, his words dripping with disgust. "Nothing much, she seems to be worried about Eva. She also said that Eva should've been careful before having sex with him and then sent a laughing emoji to her boyfriend."

My grip on the phone tightened, my knuckles white with rage. "So, she's not only spreading rumors, but she's also victim-blaming Eva?" I growled, my voice low and even.

The words cut deep, and I could feel my anger simmering just below the surface. How could Jamie be so heartless? Eva was her best friend, and yet she was treating her like this.
