It all starts on their farm, one sunny morning, when Wei Ying begins to pick the ripest strawberries from the strawberry patch behind their house. It's for their breakfast and A-Yuan loves them chopped up into his congee, and since Wei Ying can never say no to that cute dimpled face, his pink chubby cheeks so squishable and round, his bright silver eyes so eager and happy, that waking up in time to have breakfast with his family is absolutely worth it.
He's just about to pick another one, smiling to himself because Lan Zhan is in the shower and Wei Ying might just join him, seeing as he's all about water conservation and looking after their planet. Never let it be said that he isn't an upstanding member of the community and-
Rustle.
Rustle, rustle.
Wei Ying pauses, looking around. He waits, just in case it is the wind, or something...
The noise happens again and Wei Ying cautiously shuffles forward on his knees, bending so low he might as well be a badger sniffing at the ground. But there's a floofy white ball of fur wriggling and moving in front of him, hidden by a plethora of green leaves, and he doesn't quite know what to do about it.
It's a bunny!
A white one, and so cute, and when it turns around, Wei Ying coos gently, slowly stretching his hand out so Mr. Bunny can smell his fingers and decide if he wants to be friends or not.
Mr. Bunny does want to be friends, because he sniffs, hops, and jumps right into Wei Ying's lap, snuffling closer to his chest, and Wei Ying is utterly charmed because this has never happened to him! Usually, gentle animals stayed away from him, scared by his inability to keep still, his restlessness is enough to put them off, and yet here he is, petting the world's cutest little bun bun.
Wei Ying is so happy, his system completely flooded with those kinds of hormones that he feels as if he's dancing on a rainbow right now.
Who would have thought it?
Mr. Bun is so soft and totally melting against him, and if bunnies could purr, this one would be doing it, and Wei Ying is in love! His fur is clean but he's not wearing a collar or anything to suggest that he belongs to anyone, so Wei Ying decides then and there to keep him.
That's how Lan Zhan finds them, when he comes out of the kitchen door and sees Wei Ying sprawled in the strawberry patch, half asleep with a hand on the white bunny who IS fast asleep on his chest. Of course, he takes a picture or three...
Then he fetches A-Yuan, whose three-year-old face lights up with excitement!!
"Bunny!" He squeals, and it's just foresight that made Lan Zhan wait by the kitchen to let him get used to the sight.
"Mn," he says patiently, in that tone where A-Yuan knows more is coming. "Bunnies get scared easily. A-Yuan must be quiet."
"K, Diedie, A-Yuan be quiet," he stage-whispers, putting a chubby finger over his smiling mouth, not in any way showing that he would be. He's practically vibrating in Lan Zhan's arms right now, his little body too full of wriggly excitement!
He must get bunny now!
"Good boy," Lan Zhan kisses the side of his head as he slowly makes his way towards the two lying in the strawberry patch. "Very quiet," he reminds A-Yuan again.
The toddler nods solemnly, no less excited for the warnings.
Wei Ying opens an eye to watch them as they sit down carefully next to him, with A-Yuan on Lan Zhan's lap.
"Mr. Bun is asleep right now, but you can stroke him gently, baby," Wei Ying says, looking at Lan Zhan to assist their child.
"Mn. Like this," Lan Zhan takes A-Yuan's soft pudgy hand and lifts one finger to run it down the bunny's back lightly.
