The Promise

The five of them was shocked hearing Nickolai words.
"Why? Do you not dare?"
Irene couldn't refute.
"If you don't reveal yourself now, I will assume that my claim is true."
Seeing that her life is at stake, Irene could only think of one way. She then takes the shot.
"Apologies your highness, it is not that I don't dare. I just couldn't do it. From way I come from, the only person who I can reveal my face is....my husband. It has been for centuries in my family. So please, your highness pardon me for this in a way to respect my ancestors."
To hear such revelation, both Arlo and Lucas eyes shook. They came to realise that's the reason why, she's wearing a veil.
Only Old Judy and Lydia has their suspicions, but they only keep it in by themselves.
While, Nickolai laugh hearing such reasons as he finds it amusing.
"Are you telling me, if I were to see your face, I will have to take you as my consort?"
Hearing that, Lucas and Arlo couldn't help but worried.
"I'm sorry, your highness." Irene only bow down her head. Hoping in her heart, that this will be her way out. For she knows, that Nickolai is repulsed with the idea of having a woman as his companion. So she was sure that he wouldn't force her to reveal her face.
Laughing, Nickolai then came to a conclusion.
"Alright then, I will take you in."
Hearing his answer, all of them were shocked, especially Irene. She didn't expect he will accept it.
"You have my words. I will take you as my consort. Think of this as your reward, from the results of your good deeds. The rest of you, may leave. For she will only reveal her face in front of me." Nickolai orders.
Irene has reached a conclusion that she will definitely die here in the hand of the male lead.
Her whole body tremble to such fate.
The two guards then escort Lydia and Old Judy out. Both of them take a look at Irene, feeling worried. Arlo also had to obey the order. He take a look at Irene. Feeling lost in his heart, he then left. Only Lucas seems to be hesitant. Just as he was about to leave, he suddenly turned back and kneeled down. Nickolai was shocked with his sudden behaviour.
"Your highness, please forgive me. I have already proposed to Miss Irene. She is to be betrothed to me." Lucas declares.
Irene was also stunned for Lucas action.
Nickolai was silent for a minute, as in to process what just happened. He then looks at Irene.
"Is this true, Miss Irene? You're betrothed to my trusted aide?"
Irene bow down her head. She doesn't need to look at his face to know how furious he is. His beloved has proposed to a woman. She can imagine how hard it is for the male lead to keep calm. Still, Irene have to put her life matter first. Seeing this is probably the way out, Irene has to agree.
"Yes, your Highness."
With that, Nickolai laugh.
"Raise both of you. Why didn't you tell me earlier, for I will have congratulate you both." He said as he reaches towards Lucas to raise him up. Irene was skeptical but she remains silent as she tries to stand from her feet. Seeing her struggles, Lucas help her. Irene couldn't refuse him, for her legs is numb. She still takes a peek towards the male lead to see his reaction. The male lead watches their actions with a smile. Irene then look down.

In her room, Irene thinks hard. For she still find it hard to believe for what happened just now. She is betrothed to the male protagonist, the man who is the love of the male lead life. Everything is so complicated now, she getting to close to the plot story of the novel. She wonders what happened if Lucas is to know her true identity. No! She must escape. She can't marry the male protagonist!
Suddenly someone knock the door.
"It's me Lucas, may I come in?"
"Yes." It took a second for Irene to answer. Lucas then came in. Both look at eachother.
"Irene, I know it is hard to process. For everything that's happening. But I could only think of this way. For I fear of your fate, if you are to be the crown prince consort. I don't want you to suffer any grievances." He tries to explain.
"Your holiness, if I may ask?"
Lucas nods his head.
"Don't you have someone you care about in your heart?" Irene ask.
"No. No one is special in my heart, until now. Irene you are someone I want and care about." He said looking straight at her. Like almost into her soul.
Irene heart then beats loudly. But she tries to remains calm.
"Your holiness, what if I happened to disappoint you if you are to see my true face? Won't you regret it?"
"No. For the couple of days, I get the chance to know you. For all that little time we spend together, it is enough for me to know my heart. This time it is not about taking responsibility. Irene, I want to be with you. I know that you may not love me. And I won't force you to do so. All I want is for you to be safe. I promise you. You will never suffer any grief and I will make sure that you will live comfortably when you're with me. And I know that you will not trust me. But I believe in time, you will see my true heart. I'm willing to wait for you."
Hearing such promises, her heart start to sway.
"Then....I will be in your care, Lucas."
Irene said his name for the first time, as she decided to accept his proposal.
"Thank you, Irene. I won't disappoint you." Lucas smile with happiness. His heart was beating loudly. He almost pull her in a hug. The woman in his heart has accepted his proposal. He make a promise in his heart that he will protect her forever, even if it going against the Crown Prince.
