There is a fierce battle going on deep in the forest.
Soldiers are fighting against a group of assassins.
The assassins are wiped out one by one.
Seeing how outnumbered they are, the remaining assassins try to run away.
As they attempt to escape on their horses, numerous arrows are shot toward them. While some are hit, a few skilled assassins manage to block the arrows.
Just when they think they can escape, a spear appears out of nowhere and strikes the vital spots of their horses. The horses neigh in pain.
All the assassins riding the horses fall off. With the heavy impact of hitting the ground, they groan in pain.
The soldiers then surround them. The assassins fail to escape.
A man appears on his horse, rushing toward them.
As he reaches them, he dismounts.
One of the soldiers brings the spear to him.
"Your Highness."
He is the one who threw the spear at the assassins.
That person is Crown Prince Nickolai.
He looks down at all the injured assassins.
"I heard that you managed to hurt the holy priest?" he asks with a hint of a sneer. Nickolai pulls out his sword and points it at them.
"Do you know how much pain he would have had to endure?"
In a matter of seconds, he kills one of the assassins. Blood splashes over him.
All of the assassins fear for their lives as they try to stay away from him. But he keeps approaching them, killing them one by one.
The soldiers stand still, blocking any attempt at escape.
"No one dares to hurt him under my watch. Yet all of you dared to. So I suppose you are all seeking death!" he chuckles almost maliciously.
One of the assassins even tries to reveal information in exchange for his life.
However, Nickolai kills them all without mercy.
He even prolongs their deaths, torturing them. The screams that once filled the forest are soon replaced by silence.
"Set off now. Let’s not waste any more time." Nickolai wipes the blood from his sword and mounts his horse, galloping off as the soldiers follow behind him.
After hearing Lucas’s proposal, Irene runs off to Marcus’s place. Seeing that she is there, she checks on Marcus’s condition.
"It seems that you’re feeling better." Irene carefully inspects his leg and temperature, noting the improvement.
"It’s because the gentleman who was with you paid the old physician handsomely. He dared not be careless. Now, because of his attentive care, my condition is improving," Marcus explains.
He chats more and seems livelier now. Irene smiles as she listens.
"Thank you for the food, Irene," Marcy says.
"Don’t mention it. I should take my leave now. Take care. I will come again to see you both," Irene says, carrying her large basket full of supplies.
After bidding farewell, Irene continues her journey.
Just as she walks, she sees Lucas in front of her.
"Your Holiness, what are you doing here?" she asks, startled.
“I asked around for your whereabouts.”
He then reaches for the basket on her back and carries it instead.
"No, it’s fine…" Irene tries to stop him.
"Just let me carry it," Lucas insists.
Seeing his expression, Irene relents. They walk in silence. Irene feels awkward and says nothing.
"You left the tavern so suddenly, so I told Old Judy I would go look for you," Lucas says.
"Oh…" Irene recalls that moment with him.
"I want to… I want to apologize for my recent proposal. It was too abrupt. I didn’t realize how dismissive I was of your feelings when I made that decision. I’m sorry," Lucas says sincerely.
"It’s… it’s alright, Your Holiness," Irene replies, feeling burdened by his apology.
"All I wanted was to show how grateful I am to you. But I ended up offending you."
"It’s alright, Your Holiness. I forgive you already," Irene says. Seeing his humility, she cannot bring herself to ignore him.
Lucas looks at her gratefully.
"Irene, if I may be so bold… I want to be your friend. Can we be friends?"
Hearing his request, Irene nods. She thinks to herself that as long as she stays away from the palace, the dukedom, and the main plot, being friends with the male protagonist might not be so bad.
Both of them feel at ease after settling their feelings.
As they walk, Lucas glances at the basket he is carrying.
"What’s all this?" he asks.
"Curious?" Irene replies.
Lucas nods.
"Then just follow me," Irene says.
They finally arrive at their destination—a place where poor people live.
As Irene tends to them, Lucas comes to a realization.
Irene visits the poor who cannot afford food or medicine. She treats them, gives them medicine, and even provides food to prevent starvation.
Seeing this, something in his heart begins to melt.
All the people there thank them as they leave.
A young girl approaches Irene and gives her a small flower. Irene smiles and accepts it. The girl runs back home happily.
Lucas watches Irene as she looks at the flower.
Irene feels content, smiling softly. All her hard work feels worthwhile.
Meanwhile, Lucas comes to realize the depth of his growing feelings.
