Caroline sat down on the couch leaning into Addy. "Why are fathers the worst?" Her birthday was tomorrow and for the first time in her life she didn't want to see her dad.

Lia snorted from her spot on the couch on Caroline's other side. Katherine and Rebekah took up the chairs on the other side of the room.

"We just have great luck with parents. My father tried to kill me, same with Bekah's, your father tortured you, and Kat's disowned her."

She giggled and Care glanced at her strangely. "I don't see how that's funny."

"I mean it's sort of funny. We should form a club. Team Daddy Issues."

Caroline snorted and Kat and Bekah both started laughing. Addy just rolled her eyes, mirth in her expression. "Am I seriously the only one who has a dad that loves and respects me."

"Yes," they all replied in unison.

"I mean at least that explains why you're all so messed up and I'm perfect." Care rolled her eyes and hit Addy lightly on the head.

"Oh, so perfect," she muttered.

"Okay, fine, maybe a have a few slight imperfections but at least my dad cares about me. That's why I'm the Jesper Fahey of the group." Rebekah's eyebrows furled slightly.

Lia scoffed and flipped her hair behind her head. "Please, Kaz Brekker is so much better. His parents might be dead but at least he can outsmart everyone around him and doesn't have a crippling gambling addiction. #getbrekkered."

This was a conversation they had had many times and Care was sure they would have many more. There was a level of immaturity to it for people who were supposed to be graduating high school in less than a year but they needed that. They had spent far too much time worrying about dying. They deserved to have fun.

Rebekah started to open her mouth but before she could Caroline cut her off. "Inej Ghafa is clearly the best. I mean she went through so much but she never let it break her. She might not be as violent as Kaz but he couldn't climb an incinerator shaft or scale a silo, plus she has daggers."

Katherine grinned. "Personally I'm a fan of Nina Zenik." They had forced her to read the books and though she had complained about them, Care knew she had grown to love them as much as the rest of them.

"I mean she's a shameless flirt which I of course approve of and she can control dead corpses which is so fucking cool." Kat frowned. "Wait, do you think she could control vampires, like we're dead but we're not fully dead?"

Lia tilted her head considering. "I don't know. We have to figure this out. This is now priority number one."

"Will someone please tell me what is going on? I don't understand a single word any of you are saying."

Addy turned to Bekah with a grin. "It's from Six of Crows. A book series. They're characters. You have to read it."

Care turned to Lia who had pulled out a whiteboard from who knows where and along with Katherine was figuring the odds on if Nina could control vampires.

Addy had got one of the books and was showing it to Rebekah who still seemed super confused and Caroline let herself smile. They were her true family, blood or not, and she hoped this would never end.

Cordelia beamed up at her sister as she walked down the stairs. She rushed over and pulled her into a hug. "Happy birthday!"

Care laughed hugging Lia back. "I think you're more excited about my birthday than I am."

"Of course I am. It's your official unofficial eighteenth birthday. I've been planning this for years. All your other birthdays will be nothing compared to this."
