"Thank you, Alan, for bringing that to the group. I think fear is something we can all relate to." The doctor spoke to the group of psych patients sat around him.
The patients all sat in a circle, some with cigarettes in their hands. Opposite the doctor was Diego, whose beard had grown out, along with his hair. His eyes were fixated on the floor, trying to block out the sound of the weirdos he was surrounded by.
"Okay, who else would like to share?" Dr. Moncton said, looking around at the group "Anyone? Come on, who is next?" His eyes landed on Diego, whose head was still down, and he said "Diego, you've been awfully quiet this morning."
Diego looked up at him "Just taking it all in, Doc. Letting all the healing shit wash over me." He replied.
Dr. Moncton looked in his notebook and said "Last week you mentioned your father, how your whole childhood felt like some kind of experiment."
"It was an experiment." Diego corrected.
"Hmm." The doctor nodded "Or did it just feel like an experiment?"
"No." Diego said, irritation in his tone "It was literally an experiment."
Dr. Moncton clicked his pen and began writing in his book "Let's dig deeper. You say your father is a villian."
"Hell yeah." Diego replied.
"So you had to play hero to make Daddy mad." Dr. Moncton said mockingly.
This made the dark skinned woman, with a cigarette packet in her hands, next to Diego start giggling loudly. Her name was Lila Pitts, one of the only freaks that Diego spoke to. He wouldn't call her a friend, just someone he spoke to.
After Lila realised no one else was amused, she stopped laughing.
"I'm a grown ass man, Dr. Moncton-" Diego was cut off.
"Who still defines himself in opposition to his father." Dr. Moncton said "His dead father." Diego rolled his eyes as the doctor continued "That isn't really defining yourself, is it, Diego?"
"Yeah, why don't you tell that to Luke Skywalker?" Diego said, making everyone look at him funny "I know you don't get it, but that is an excellent reference."
Dr. Moncton took his glasses off as he sair "Humour is good, truth is better. Who is the real Diego?"
Diego looked down "I don't know. I guess I've never known. But I'm ready. I'm ready to find out." Diego said dramatically, wiping the fake tear that fell down his face.
Lila put the cigarette in her mouth before starting to clap, which was followed by the rest of the group applauding Diego.
"Thank you, Diego." Dr. Moncton said, making Diego look at him, a faked sad expression "Okay, quiet time until lunch." He said, getting out of his seat.
Lila took the cigarette out of her mouth and leaned close to Diego, whispering "You're so full of shit." Her English accent piecred through his ears.
"Tears too much?" Diego questioned, keeping his eyes on Dr. Moncton.
"He saw right through it." Lila said.
