Two sat in X's living room as usual, watching on the TV boredly.

He flicked to the news channel, eyes rolling at the usual talk about police until he came across something that made him choke on air.

"Today, an individual named X Variable was found injured on 4th street. According to authorities and witnesses, he was run over by a car. The driver was on a run from the cops, and was later caught and jailed. As if right now, the victim resides in the Yoyle City Hospital. More info on-"

Two shuts the TV off, dropping the remote on the floor.

He'd found it odd that X had been gone for days, but his mind had always been able to formulate an excuse for the human's absence.

Until now.

With a quick pop, Two teleported away.

-

Four was introducing Six to his groupies when Two appeared out of nowhere, falling onto the ground with a loud thump. Six eyed the demon in confusion.

"Two?" Six asked. Two nodded, dazed and winded.

"Hey Six- wait, Six? You died?" Two asked. Four kicked the green deity, prompting him to sit up. Five raised an eyebrow at Four, who shrugged.

"Yup. I-I have all of my memories though, if that was your next question." Six responds. Two hums quietly, catching his breath.

"Yes- well, Four, X is in the hospital." Two says. Four bristles up, and Five makes a startled noise. Eight only raises their eyebrows.

"Wait, isn't 'X' that one human you brought in?" Five questioned.

"Indeed, it was, wasn't it? One is going to be pissed." Eight murmurs. Six reenters the conversation.

"Oh right, X. Nine went to visit him. He got hit by a car or something." The cyan deity's tail sweeps the red grass underneath them in what seems like a calm manner. "Apparently he got injured pretty badly."

Four processes it all slowly. "...X is where?"

"Hospital. Some criminal hit him while on the run. He was the only one hit, meaning he's the only one who didn't see the car." Two enunciates. Four narrows his eyes at the green demon, teleporting away. Two sighs, standing up and dusting off his clothes.

"He's going to do something rash," Two sighed. He glanced at the remaining deities. "Is anyone up for some tea?"

-

X listens to what the deity offers, thinking hard.

"Y-You're saying, you can return Four's memories?" X clarifies. One nods.

"You'll just owe me a favor, is all. Nothing more!" One responded. X studied the unfazed demon dubiously.

"Are there...limitations to said favor?" X questions. One's smile doesn't falter, and they lean back into their chair.

"Nope! Although, if it's any reassurance, I understand that you're mortal, so I will try to steer clear of dangerous tasks." One replied. X thought over his options in a nervous fervor.

On one hand, he'd get the Four that he'd always known back.

But on the other hand, would Four be the same? Did he really want that Four back?

X ran through everything that happened so far.

The Four he had right now was kinder. He wasn't cruel, he let X choose for himself. His best interest was always to make X feel better. X loved that.

But he missed the old Four too.

He missed the way Four playfully shoved him around. He missed the sibling fights he'd witnessed between Four and Two. He missed the way he and Four would watch for shooting stars, leaning on each other and pointing out constellations. He missed the way Four would stay with him for nights on end, practically living with him.

He missed the way Four had made it so easy for him to ignore his own feelings, because his blue friend had never returned them. Not once.

It was a bad idea, and X knew it deep down. Four should've been the one to make the decision, it was their memories after all.

But, as X hovered the pen over the blue-tinted paper, he couldn't help but remember.

All the laughs, the talks, that he had shared with Four as a kid.

He couldn't help but remember his fresher memories with his rebooted friend; the memories he wanted to be hated for.

He wanted Four to hate all the things they had done while he was a demon, so that he could shove down his bubbling emotions again like he used to.

Quickly signed, shoving the paper away with regret. One snickered, lightly taking the paper into their hands.

"Good choice. Now, I'll leave you be. Au revoir!" One teleported away, and X blinked.

One second, he was staring at an empty blue chair, and the next, at a white hospital ceiling.

...He hoped that it hadn't been a dream.
