X woke up during the middle of the night panicking, his previous nightmare clouding all of his judgement. Uncontrollable tears spilled from him in waves as his eyes rapidly scanned the surroundings. Unfortunately, the lights of the green tent in the corner had been long since turned off, and the room to his door was closed, leaving him in complete and utter darkness.
X backed into the corner of his bed, crying quietly to himself as anxiety wracked every fiber of his being.
That was, until he heard his window being levered open. His unfocused gaze shot towards the noise, watching as moonlight seeped into the room. A single claw was shoved between the window and its frame, steadily pushing it open with a low scraping noise.
X blinked at who was behind it all, breathing heavily.
...Four?
The deity was clinging to the outer wall, wings spread like a bat as they forcefully opened the window. The bluenette clearly hadn't noticed him yet, too focused on carefully shoving the glass upwards to notice the panicked human on the other side of the room.
X felt more panic course through him as his mind unwillingly repeated the contents of his nightmare, and tears ran down his face. A choked noise escaped him, and he regretted it as soon as Four's eyes were on him.
The demon studied X was a blank intensity that made X shiver- at least, more than he already was. X watched as Four gave one more rough push at the glass plane before gracefully slipping through the narrow opening. They came to sit next to X in silence, staying a respectful distance away.
X shifted uncomfortably under Four's prickling gaze, his eyes wet like a maple tap. The nightmare was blurrier now, but its aftershock still wrecked X.
Four flexed their wings subconsciously, but X misread it as an invitation. The human's eyes welled up, and he practically threw himself at the demon, sobs and apologizes slipping from his lips over and over again.
The deity froze before bringing their arms around X, holding the human silently. X cried quietly, trembling from it all.
The human felt Four lower his face on his head, and he sniffed. Four, on the other hand, was inhaling X's sweet, starfruit-like scent, as if holding the human close was a luxury he seldom had the privilege of experiencing.
X's cries slowly slowed to a stop, and he sat there in Four's embrace, eyes closed. A low purr rumbled in Four's chest, and X sighed, letting one last apology slip from him.
"I'm sorry for being a bad friend, Four, You deserve better," X murmured. Four rubbed X's back in a comforting motion.
"I don't care anymore. My only wish is to see you safe and sound." Four responded. X nodded, slowly drifting back off when-
X rolled off his bed, smacking into the floor below. He yelped, quickly sitting up.
...That had all been a dream, hadn't it?
X sighed, a wave of embarrassment hitting him. He hadn't anticipated his delusions to take such a...unpreceded turn.
He rubbed his eyes, blinking away the fog in his vision. His window was closed, the tent lights were on, and the door was open. X sighed.
It was still dark outside, and a quick glance at his phone confirmed that it was indeed the middle of the night.
Maybe a walk would help clear his mind
-
Walking outside did not help them at all.
When they stared at the stars and the full moon in the sky, all they could think about was Four.
...Maybe Four would be willing to talk to them? The idea of calling out into the empty night for their friend seemed kind of foolish, but their only other idea was re-summoning Four with the ritual they had used before. And, as flawless as the plan seemed, it would also force Four back. X wanted their friend to talk on their terms.
But...maybe Four would hear them.
"Four?" X called out tentatively. "Four? Are you...there? Are you coming back soon? Four?"
Silence greeted them, and they sighed. They should've expected it.
Nonetheless, they continued their walk. The cool, midnight air was refreshing, and it was quiet, calming them down.
