Since the first volume, I've been teasing this chapter. Given all the stuff that's been going on, reveals, plot twists, fights...

In my opinion, along with Vol 6.5's "No Wrong To See," this is one of the major bits of the story.

Location: Outside Shiganshina, Wall Maria
Time: Morning, Winter

Ymir, in her Jaw Titan form, sprinted across the open expanse, kicking up snow as she made a direct line for the Female Titan.

Her fanged maw twisted into a sneer as she leapt, claws bared, aiming for Annie's throat. Her mind raced as she lunged—if she could just land a solid hit, she might be able to throw Annie off balance, just enough to make a difference.

Annie Leonhart did not flinch.

Instead, she took a half-step back, shifting her weight and raised her forearm.

CRACK!

With an ear-piercing crack, her hardened fist met Ymir's claws, the impact sending a shockwave through the battlefield. Ymir snarled in frustration as her strike was deflected, her feet skidding in the packed snow.

Her Titan's jaw clenched tightly, steam hissing from her nostrils as she regained her stance.

"..."

There were no trees, no rooftops, nothing Ymir could use to weave around, no way to use her speed and agility to her advantage.

Annie was controlling the fight.

Ymir knew it too—she felt it in the way Annie's stance never faltered, the way she barely reacted to Ymir's reckless aggression.

She needed to change tactics fast.

WOOSH!

A group of dismounted Scouts rushed forward, blades drawn, intent on carving through the Female Titan's tendons.

Annie barely spared them a glance.

In the middle of slipping past Ymir's next lunge, she pivoted and sent a crushing backhand into the ground, sweeping several soldiers into a bloody mist. The remaining few managed to dart past her legs, trying to flank her. But the Pure Titans beyond the immediate battle had been waiting.

They fell upon the helpless Scouts like rabid animals, jaws snapping shut as the battlefield grew ever redder.

Ymir roared in fury, lunging again, aiming for Annie's ribs, but Annie was faster than she had any right to be.

She sidestepped, twisting, letting Ymir overextend.

With a quick snap of her hardened fingers, she slammed her palm into the Jaw Titan's side, sending Ymir sprawling across the snow. The impact sent a shockwave through Ymir's body, her Titan's ribs cracking audibly as she tumbled, snow and debris flying in all directions.

Ymir didn't let up.

She pushed herself up and started digging.

It wasn't much, but it was something—anything to create an obstacle, a distraction.

Clawing at the frozen ground, she kicked up large chunks of dirt and snow, sending them flying toward Annie's eyes. The makeshift barrage temporarily clouded Annie's vision, buying Ymir precious seconds to reposition.

Ymir sprinted to the side, trying to circle around, hoping that just maybe she could get the jump on Annie before she cleared her sight.

It wasn't enough.
