Chapter 4:

The closer the team got to the championship, the more intense the practices became. The pressure was mounting, and the stakes had never been higher. But for Paige and Azzi, the real challenge was maintaining their secret while balancing the demands of the game.

One evening, after a particularly grueling practice, the team decided to grab dinner together. Paige and Azzi exchanged a quick glance, knowing they'd have to be extra careful in such a public setting.

At the restaurant, they sat at opposite ends of the table, forced to join in the team's banter while trying to keep their own emotions in check. Paige found herself sneaking glances at Azzi, her heart aching with the desire to be close to her.

Midway through the meal, kk leaned over to Paige, a mischievous grin on her face. "So, are you and Azzi hiding something from us?"

Paige nearly choked on her drink, her mind racing for a response. "What do you mean?"

Kk shrugged, her grin widening. "I don't know. You two have been spending a lot of time together lately, that's all."

Paige forced a laugh, trying to play it cool. "We're just working on some plays together. Trying to stay sharp, you know?"

Kk nodded, seemingly satisfied with the answer, but Paige could feel her heart pounding in her chest. She caught Azzi's eye from across the table, and they shared a look of relief mixed with nervousness.

After dinner, they managed to slip away from the group, finding a quiet spot outside the restaurant. The cool night air did little to calm Paige's racing thoughts.

"That was close," Paige said, her voice trembling slightly.

Azzi nodded, wrapping her arms around herself as if to ward off the cold. "We've got to be more careful. The last thing we need is for someone to find out now."

Paige sighed, leaning against the wall. "I hate this. I hate feeling like we have to hide."

Azzi stepped closer, her eyes filled with understanding. "I know, but we're almost there. Just a little longer, and then we can be honest with everyone."

Paige nodded, but the weight of their secret was starting to take its toll. As they stood there in the quiet darkness, Paige wondered how much longer they could keep this up without it all falling apart.
