It had been a long day at work. The sky was dark and filled with roaring clouds which drenched her windshield with an endless amount of rain.
Jennie struggled to see, her wipers on the fastest speed possible. Her headlights were bright but the road was bare and quiet, making it harder to see where she was going.
She had passed the city's sign a while ago and knew this road like the back of her hand. Preferably, Jennie wanted to get home in one piece to have a relaxing bath, a comforting glass of wine and a book in bed.
Her line of work was definitely challenging to the mind. Hearing what people went through and having to find unique ways to fix things was mentally straining. So, having a relaxing day at the end of it always prepared her for tomorrow.
However, today has been anything but relaxing. This morning, her car wouldn't start. She had to get her neighbour to give her a hand in jump-starting it and once it was working, it made this horrible noise every time she would break.
Jennie frowned when the noise returned, hoping that pressing the accelerator would stop it. It didn't. Her car continued to make this loud rattling noise until it started to slow down.
"Fuck!" She exclaimed, using her hand to fiddle with the gear sticks in hopes of getting just a little bit further so she was back in the street lights.
Jennie could feel her car slowing down and indicated right so she could park up. She groaned in frustration, turning on her hazard lights and opening her car door to have a look at it.
She didn't mind that it was pouring with rain, and it soaked her the second she stepped out. Holding her hand up to her eyes, she grabbed her phone from her pocket. Turning on her flashlight, she did her best to inspect her car and then the area she was in.
From a distance, she could see a familiar road sign. One indicated a small town that she knew very well. Sighing, she opened her contacts to click on someone and ring them, bringing her phone to her ear even as the water dripped down her face.
"Hey." A groggy voice said, a voice of someone who had just been woken up from her sleep.
"Hey, Lisa. I'm sorry for waking you up," Jennie said apologetically, having to sit back inside her car. The rain was too heavy and her clothes were practically drenched. Her white shirt became see-through and her linen pants stuck to her thighs.
"It's okay," Lisa yawned and Jennie heard her groaning as she stretched her limbs. "Is everything okay? Haven't you just finished work?"
Jennie laughed. "Yeah, about that..." She looked around her car for something she could use to dry herself off with. "My car just broke down and I'm not far from you. I was wondering if you could pick me up so I could call the garage."
Lisa was a little quiet at first, so Jennie chimed in. "It's okay if you can't, I know it's a bad time." Her anxious voice seeped through the phone. "I'm sorry, forget I called. I'll get an Uber home. I'm so sorry, goodnight—"
"—What?" Lisa asked, the phone shuffling. "I just got up to get my car keys. I don't want you to get an Uber home, especially not at this time." She shuffled around a little more. "I'll be there in a jiffy! Send me your location!"
Jennie smiled, humming before she put the phone down and sent Lisa her location. She tried to sit back and relax in her car, but her soaked clothes only frustrated her more.
She ran her hands down her face.
Opening her phone again, she dialled the number of her insurance company and requested a local tow driver to pick her car up to take into the garage.
