An arm draped around me, interrupting the deep sleep I was previously in. Pressed up too tightly behind me was my boyfriend, Evan, our legs tangled together and his hot breath down my neck.
Quietly, I lifted his arm from my chest and rolled out of bed, literally, hitting the floor and wincing at the noise it made.
Retrieving my phone, I tiptoe out and shut the door quickly. My footsteps were light on the dark brown wood of our apartment living room.
Evan and I have been together for 5 years, ever since I was 17 and he was 18. 'High school sweethearts' is what some people might describe it as, despite the fact that we both haven't aged a day since we turned 18. So, technically, if we were soulmates he would be 23 and I would be 22, but we're stuck at 18.
We knew from the moment none of us began to age we weren't soulmates. It didn't matter, though, because we loved each other too much.
It's not like I wouldn't leave him if I did find my soulmate. That probably sounds horrible but I've been waiting 4 years, and there's more than 7 billion people in the world. My moment has got to come soon, right?
Unlocking my phone I saw about 5 messages from my best friend, Luke, at the top of my notifications. Luke and I, however, have been friends since middle school, but he wasn't my soulmate. It's a shame, though, because he's really freaking attractive.

From Luke:
• 7 so hurry up im picking u up in 15 minutes *6:32*I closed my phone and slid to the door to the bedroom, gently shaking Evan awake. He opened his eyes groggily and squinted when looking up at me.
"Hi, good evening, listen babe, I'm going to a party with Luke at 7, so I'm just letting you know." I kissed his cheek and paced over to the closet we shared.
Before he could protest I managed to grab an outfit, do my hair, brush my teeth, and barely put on my makeup before the doorbell rang with Luke standing at the front door.
"M'lady," he mocked as he held his arm out next to him in a bow. We walked side-by-side down the hallway, elevator, and into his car, the sun quickly setting.
It was barely getting dark as we drove there, the soft music of the radio in the background as Luke drummed his fingers on the steering wheel to the tune.
The phone in my hand vibrated, and I looked down to see Evan's name at the top of the screen.
-
From Evan:
• I want you home by 11. *6:55*I sighed, throwing my head back into the headrest of the seat.
Luke glanced over at me, then back at the road. "What's wrong, Cas?," he asked.
"Evan says he wants me home by 11."
Luke furrowed his brows in either annoyance or confusion. "Why do you even stay with that jerk? He acts like he's your dad or something. I don't like the way he treats you."
I rolled my eyes. If anything, Luke was more like a dad than Evan apparently was. "He's still my boyfriend. I should respect what he wants. Plus, I don't want to lose 5 years worth of trust."
As we drive up to the large 2 story house, Luke parked on the curb and it was his turn to roll his eyes.
"Cassie, he's not even your soulmate. You should just dump him and spend more time focusing-"
After hearing enough of him talking, I got out and slammed the door before he could finish.
He quickly got out and ran up to me, locking his car and maneuvering around everybody.
Considering I was 5 foot 3, it was easy to lose me in a crowd. But thanks to Luke being 10 feet tall I'm almost certain we could find each other.
The living room smelled of booze, sweat, and sex. Not sure how those three combined, but it definitely didn't fit together.
As I pushed my way through crowds of people that looked either way too young or way too old to be here, I finally got into the kitchen.
Luke was panting when he finally made it, hands on his knees and all.
He picked up a light brown drink in a red solo cup and took one sip before he put it down quickly and grabbed my hand.
"Where are we going?," I asked, practically screaming over the loud music.
"I have some friends I want you to meet," he yelled behind him.
The crowd was getting worse and as I started getting claustrophobic, we made it to the back porch, where only 10 or so people were, half of them clutching onto each other.
Luke let go of my hand and led me to two guys leaning against the wall near the back. One had platinum blonde, almost white, hair, and the other had raven black hair and tanned skin. They both had tattoos, and were almost wearing the exact same thing (tank tops, black jeans, vans).
"Calum, Michael, this is Cassie. Cassie, this is Calum," he points to the one with raven hair, "and Michael," he points to the one with blonde hair.
They both greet me, the boy with blonde hair eyeing me up and down. Feeling uncomfortable, I turn to go before Luke spins me back around.
"Come on, Cas. You can stay and chat a while, can't you?," Luke asks. I shrug slightly. "I guess."
"So," Calum starts, "you two soulmates?"
I let out a laugh. "No, we're just really close friends. Technically I'm 22 right now, but still 18."
Calum nods. "I know how you feel. I'm technically 23, and I still haven't found mine yet."
Michael raises his bottle. "Same."
We make small talk a little longer before I finally get to leave, making my way into the sea of people and back to the kitchen.
I finish around 2 drinks before Michael appears, throwing away an empty beer bottle to reach for another.
"Why you in here all by yourself?," he asks.
I shrug. "I don't really like parties. They're too large. But it's best to make use of them while I can before I start Aging."
He nods, taking a drink from the water bottle-sized opening. "You know why I like parties?," he holds up a finger for each reason, "sex, alcohol, and music. It's practically my life motto."
"If that's your life motto your life must be pretty boring. Those 3 can get boring after awhile."
"Not music, though. There's new music every day. That can't possibly be considered boring."
"You have a point there."
I'm not sure how, but after 20 seconds of silence, we ended up in the middle of the kitchen, making out. Then 20 seconds after that, we ended up in an empty bedroom upstairs, our clothes thrown all over the floor.
As Michael hovered over me, he mumbled into my lips, "are you sure you want this? Are you okay with it?"
"Yes, I'm sure. Hurry up. Do you have a condom?"
"Oh shit, hang on." He gets out of bed as I hear the crinkle of a wrapper, and the silhouette of it being rolled on.
Then we were back where we started, with Michael over me and myself biting into his shoulder and leaving scratch marks down his back.
In the corner of my mind, I knew that something was wrong with what was happening, but I couldn't pinpoint it exactly. All I cared--and not cared--about was this moment of sloppy drunk sex, instead of how angry Evan would be when I wasn't home at 11.
