Y/N had never experienced anything quite like the whirlwind that was Mr De Vil's life. A life of glamour and pompous divas clinging to his arm as he paraded around London, shouting at everyone who dared to even look at him wrong, flirting with the baristas and seamstresses, and always dressed in lavish suits pressed and steamed to perfection. Y/N had only been in the De Vil whirlwind for a month and she was already exhausted. It had been a month of chasing after Mr De Vil, ensuring that he attended all his meetings on time, checking to make sure that his public image was still satisfactory, and that all of his staff were working around the clock to ensure that every stitch was in place for the upcoming fashion show that would take place in three weeks.
There were times when Y/N considered requesting a transfer back to her old job, but whenever those thoughts rolled around, she remembered her boss stamping on her hand and her coworker's carelessness and wilful ignorance of her plight. As tough as it was working for Mr De Vil, he was a fair employer. At least, he had been in the past month.
The first thing he had done after giving Y/N a new job in the car ride was take her to a nearby designer store – one of his, of course, he wouldn't take her to any old department store – and buy her a new outfit. Not just new shoes, but a whole new suit as well, complete with a handbag and a pair of matching ankle boots with a stunning two-inch heel. Immediately after, Mr De Vil had ordered Y/N to move out of her current flat across the city and into an empty apartment in one of his buildings where her commute was a little more than a five-minute walk down the hall and down a flight of stairs. But having Y/N close by was a bonus for Mr De Vil, as he had hired her as his assistant and secretary. Y/N wasn't complaining about anything but maintaining her boss' public image. The man was harder than anyone Y/N had ever met to control and had a temper that flared faster and brighter than a lightning strike. Still, Y/N had never been on the receiving end of his temper and had nothing to complain about.
But to say that Y/N was relieved when Mr De Vil announced that he and a few of his chosen staff would be leaving to travel to Venice, Italy for business, was an understatement. Not only was Mr De Vil going to be out of the public eye until the conclusion of his business the day of his return – also the day before his fashion show – but he had instructed Y/N to come along. So they were to be taking a boat from London to Calais, and from there, they would travel to Paris, where another train would be waiting to whisk them away across the country to Venice.
Y/N didn't dare show her excitement to Mr De Vil when he requested her presence. She wasn't entirely surprised that he had asked her to tag along for the ride, but she was excited about the trip. She hadn't been to Venice since well before she started working for her previous employer and was thrilled with the idea of returning.
Still, as she and Mr De Vil – along with the rest of their entourage – loaded onto the train, Y/N couldn't quell her excitement as she unpacked in the compartment. They wouldn't be on the train long, only for one night, but Y/N was thrilled with the idea of lounging on a train, watching the scenery fly by her window as autumn descended across the continent.
As she was unpacking what few things she would need, there was a gentle knock on the door. Y/N slid the door open and was surprised to find Mr De Vil standing on the other side. He frowned down at her with a quirked eyebrow before glancing around her compartment. It was simple but lavish, as was to be expected of a first-class compartment.
