Knowing that Ulysses was down in the wrecks was making Y/N restless. She had hardly been able to focus on anything since the day at the wrecks. Her team had decided to visit the wrecks closer to the surface for a while in hopes that the next time they went down they wouldn't have another encounter with a shark, but in those weeks, Y/N's mind hadn't been on her work. Once, she had loved visiting the wrecks and searching for trinkets, but after months of work, the wrecks were starting to lose their interest. The only ones still of interest were the ones lurking in the darkest depths of the sea. The ones where Ulysses roamed.

One night, as the lay in her room in the Atlantica palace, staring up at the bioluminescent jellyfish that had floated into her room, Y/N decided that she had endured enough of this strange torture. Ulysses had been haunting her mind for days on end now and she was tired of it. With any luck, seeing him again would allow her to function properly, without wondering every waking moment what he was doing down in the depths. So, she rose from her bed and gathered what few things she would need before swimming through the open window of her room, swimming quickly in the direction of the crevasse where the ships were concealed.

Visiting the trench in the darkest hours of the night brought a strange sort of haunting feeling to the area. As Y/N dove into the trench, her eyes scanned the shadowed rock faces, flickering back and forth whenever a beam of moonlight caught on the edge of a rock, her mind interpreting the illuminated surface as the spirit of a deceased sailor, looking for an aimless drifter to pull into his cursed existence. Her hands tightened around her spear as she dove deeper, forcing her eyes to remain on the wrecks at the bottom of the trench. But even as she focused on the wreck, her skin prickled with the sensation of being watched.

She felt no calmer as she reached the wreck where Ulysses had found her. The wreck was still suffering from the shark attack and from Ulysses bursting through the hull. A giant hole had been blasted through the top deck, and bits of wood now lay scattered across the area. Hovering outside the hole, Y/N debated about diving in. In water this dark, it was nearly impossible to see what lay below the deck, even with her enhanced mermaid vision. But upon hearing nothing suspicious – as fish had a strange inability to be quiet – Y/N dove into the hole, her spear clutched tightly in a defensive hold.

Y/N didn't stop swimming until she reached the room that she and Ulysses had found. The one place untouched by kelp and sponges. She had a sneaking suspicion that if she were to find Ulysses anywhere, he would be there, lounging like a king on a throne.

But to her surprise, it didn't seem like anyone had been in the room as of late, save for a large group of snails that had made a corner of the ship their home and a few muscles and clams that were basking in the quiet space. Y/N bit her lip as she glanced around. There was no sign of Ulysses, but since she was down here, she might as well search for the ring. She glanced over her shoulder and swam to the door, pushing it shut. If she was pulling out a light in water this dark, she wanted to take every possible precaution that she wouldn't be surprised. Using her shoulder, she pushed the door into its frame and swam over to the window. There was little she could do to cover the windows, but she found a few bits of broken boards that she propped up over the shattered glass, wedging them in place. Once she was sure that she had boarded up the room as much as possible, she pulled out her lantern.

The light of her lantern flooded the room and Y/N felt her heart start to thump wildly in her chest as the light cast shadows about the room. This was worse than she had anticipated. The ship seemed to come alive in the light, spirits drifting from the woodwork, their wispy fingers reaching for her limbs to pull her under. Y/N swam backwards, trying to calm herself as her tired mind continued to play tricks on her, the spirits only vanishing when Y/N shut her eyes and shook her head to clear her thoughts.
