Sunken ships were not for the faint of heart. Especially when all the rumours surrounding said ship graveyards told tales of broken and restless spirits lingering around the ships, crying out for a moment of reprieve from the constant battering of currents and their longing for the sun. But for mermaids, the legends of ghosts are more akin to fables parents tell their young children to keep them away from the dangerous predators lurking within the wrecks, searching for an easy meal. And Y/N had long since realised that the stories of haunted ships were not nearly as terrifying as the land folk made them out to be. Especially having since joined the merfolk beneath the waves, making several trips to the largest of the graveyards in search of trinkets to return to the surface.
Since discovering the world that lived beneath the waves, Ariel and Eric had made it their mission to recover as much of the lost human treasure as they could, offering it to a museum being constructed in the town for people to come and admire the relics from bygone eras. And Y/N had been more than happy to help, even sometimes offering to take their young daughter, Melody, for a swim beneath the waves.
But today was one of the days when Melody had been forbidden to accompany Y/N. For in the deepest caverns of the ocean lay the worst dangers. Dangers that could sink ships and end a mermaid's life if she weren't careful and alert. Currents plundered the wrecks that fell this far, sharks swarmed the waters, and strange mysterious creatures lurked, waiting for an unsuspecting mermaid to fall into their trap. Few dared to venture this far beneath the surface.
Today, Y/N was in search of one trinket in particular. A ring that had been lost by Eric's ancestors when they first sailed to the unclaimed island in hopes of making it their permanent home. A prince and princess recently wed on the mainland, had wanted to live a life on their own in a new home with untold adventures waiting for them. But on the journey to the island, the princess had lost her ring in a storm that caught them just off the island. It had been swallowed by the sea and had remained lost to the royal family, now a distant memory in Eric's mind.
Eric had only told Y/N the story a week before. And Y/N had instantly been intrigued. She had asked him for the ship's name, and after checking every wreck in the graveyards she regularly visited, she concluded that the ship would be down in one of the lesser visited graveyards. One far beneath the surface of the ocean, where light could hardly shine and the creatures were strange and twisted.
The ship had been called The Arcturus and was a large frigate that had sailed many a trip before being crewed by the royal couple's personal crew and friends. The ship had gone down in a storm that caught them just a short distance away from the island, but thankfully, no lives had been lost. The only casualties had been some heirlooms and relics, now forgotten by the living descendants. Until Eric had found an old manifest tucked away in the corner of the library, detailing what had been lost.
And Y/N was never one to back down from a challenge. She had immediately accepted and was now diving into the depths of the ocean, accompanied by a small team of mermaids and mermen, each armed with a spear and a twin pair of daggers, kelp bags hanging from their hips for any artefacts recovered. Going this deep was dangerous for a lone mermaid, and though most of the excavation would be carried out by mermaids exploring the wrecks on their own, going into the depths with a team was much safer. The sounds of mermaids chattering often kept away the smaller animals, and each member of the team had been trained with their weapons, perfectly capable of defending themselves against sharks and larger creatures.
