Y/N felt foolish for daring to face Prince Malcolm in his hulking Ursidae form, but when those she loved stood behind her, unaware that the prince was currently stalking his brothers back to her farm, she knew she had no choice. But when she came face to face with the creature, she felt her surety starting to drain from her body. While once she had thought the prince cold and unfeeling, she felt the bear was even more so. But now, there seemed to be not even a single ounce of humanity left in him.

Despite what Y/N thought, Malcolm still had enough humanity left in him to know who stood before him, daring to aim an arrow at his chest. A single arrow would do nothing to kill him, but he was sure Y/N was well aware of that. Still, she stood before him, her fear betrayed only in her hurried breaths and the subtle shaking of her hands as they held the bow.

"Leave," she ordered, her voice surprisingly steady.

Malcolm drew himself up onto his rear legs and snarled at Y/N, his claws flexing and glinting with malicious intent in the light of the sun.

"I don't want to kill you, Your Highness," Y/N said, "but I will if you force my hand." She took a step back, her eyes and arrow remaining locked on Malcolm's chest, where his heart pounded beneath the fur.

Malcolm fell on all fours and roared at Y/N. Y/N gasped and released the arrow, sending it soaring into Malcolm's face. Only by some miracle did the prince manage to duck out of the way, the arrow skimming across his forehead above his eye rather than piercing his flesh. The prince snarled and he turned back to Y/N's, his lips curling back as he bore his teeth to her. But Y/N just readied another arrow, her hands shaking a fraction more as she set it.

"Don't make me kill you, Malcolm. You have enough blood on your hands for both of us." Her voice was starting to shake as Malcolm drew closer, his shoulders hunched as he debated when the best time to attack Y/N would be.

He backed Y/N into a tree, her back pressed firmly against the bark. Her bow wasn't nearly as useful now, but still, she refused to let it drift from Malcolm as he drew nearer, still snarling and growling at her.

Malcolm suddenly let out a roar powerful enough to shake the forest and Y/N shrieked, releasing her bow and falling to her knees as Malcolm lifted a giant paw, poised and ready to kill her. But before he could swipe, a familiar blue sprite appeared, floating above Y/N's head, almost as if protecting her from the wrath of the eldest prince. Malcolm faltered at the sight of the sprite and lowered his paw. The sprites had been the ones to lead him to the witch on the loch, and now, they were here, protecting Y/N from his anger.

Upon noticing that Malcolm hadn't killed her, Y/N glanced up, frowning when she saw the will-o'-the-wisp. She had never seen such sprites before, and as she stood, the sprite drifted down to float in front of her, gently bobbing up and down as it waited for Y/N to grow accustomed to it. Y/N cupped her hands beneath the sprite, glancing between the bear in front of her and the sprite in her hands.

"Malcolm," Y/N asked warily. "Are you..."

Malcolm shuffled back and snarled at Y/N, snapping his jaws at her. He wasn't at all pleased with the wisp for saving her life. She had been nothing but a thorn in his side since the day she had arrived in the kingdom. His father had confessed before his death that he hoped one of his princes would be able to win her heart and her hand in marriage, and he had implied more than once that he hoped Malcolm would be the one to win her over. Though relations between the two had been icy at best, Malcolm had grown increasingly irritated with Y/N each time she spoke to one of his brothers or was invited to the palace. He had quickly grown tired of his father's attempts at matchmaking, even though he could see the logic behind his father's words. Y/N would make a good queen. She was kind, wise, brave, just, and strong. Everything a ruler needed to be in the eyes of his father and his brothers.
