Maleficent wasn't sure why he was making so much effort to ensure that the Moors looked perfect for the strange little human slumbering in one of the many guest rooms in Aurora's castle. The little human had succumbed to the fire and smoke only moments after the fire had been lit. She had been unconscious ever since, ignorant of the fae watching her as she slept, patrolling the borders of the Moors when Aurora stayed by the woman's side, ensuring that the citizens of her village didn't sneak into the Moors to make an attempt on her life for a second time. And of course, while he was patrolling, he would watch the leaves as they fluttered down, some remaining the same emerald shade they kept the entire year, others turning the colour of autumn jewels as the seasons shifted.

Hours turned into days and weeks, and soon Maleficent started growing concerned that the little human would never wake. Had he left her in the fire for too long? He hadn't thought so, but she was a feeble little human. But every time he checked, her pulse still throbbed beneath his fingers, and her chest rose and fell with each gentle breath, a reminder that she was still alive at the very least. Still, Malficent's impatience was mounting. How long would she torture him in her unconscious state? If not for the risks it might pose to her body, he would wake her with a spell or draught.

It was the true start of autumn when the human finally woke, and the autumn equinox had brought a new sort of magic to the moors. But with it had come the farmers, searching for more kindling for their fires. Maleficent had been tending to a large oak on the edge of the moors, healing the trunk from a hunter's axe, when the three infuriating little pixies suddenly appeared, twittering and chittering like baby birds eager for a worm.

"Maleficent! Maleficent!"

Maleficent turned away from the tree, lowering his hand. Knotgrass was hurling towards him and nearly crashing into him.

"What," he asked, peeved that his peace had been disturbed – not for the first time that morning. Diaval had only just left after reporting to Maleficent on the status of the little human's old home. Diaval and some of the other moorfolk had been working in the wee hours of the night to gather Y/N's things and store them safely away until she woke. On Maleficent's orders of course.

"The girl –"

"I want to tell him," Thistlewit injected, pouting as she hovered beside Knotgrass.

"No, I should get to tell him! I'm the one who –"

"Enough," Maleficent roared, silencing the pixies. He had been on edge for weeks now.

"The girl's awake," Knotgrass exclaimed before one of the others could cut her off again.

Maleficent's wings blew the pixies aside as he pushed off from the ground, soaring through the sky to Aurora's castle.

It had been three years since the defeat of the queen and though Maleficent and the other moor folk were becoming an increasingly common sight, there were still minor hostilities fostered between the kingdom and Maleficent. Most likely because he had been framed for attacking the king and the fact that he had turned the queen into a goat. As he flew over the kingdom, he saw a few children running to their mothers for comfort, whimpering in his shadow. A few of the men drew pitchforks and butcher knives into their hands. As if such feeble human weapons could do anything to him. Aurora had placed high regulations on iron production since her rise to queen.
