Lunch came quicker than I had anticipated. Jessica and I made our way to the cafeteria, our packed lunches in hand. We found an empty table near the back of the room and settled in quietly. The noise of the cafeteria buzzed around us, but Jessica's presence always made me feel like I was in a bubble, isolated from the rest of the world."So, how were your Christmas celebrations?" I asked, hoping to start a polite conversation. "I haven't seen you since the nativity service."
"It was very eventful," she replied, her tone light but deliberate. "My mother and father visited. I'm sad you didn't get to see them again, they were asking about you a lot."
I nodded, already feeling the weight of the expectations attached to that statement. "I must apologise to them next time I see them," I added, knowing it was the right thing to say.
"Mmm, well, you'll definitely see them soon enough... when we get married," she said casually, the word "married" slipping from her lips as if we had both agreed to it long ago.
I stiffened slightly, my fingers tightening around my fork. Jessica always talked about our future as if it was set in stone as if there was no possibility of deviation from the path our parents had laid out for us. I should've been used to it by now, but every time she mentioned the wedding, it felt like a weight was added to my chest, making it harder to breathe.
"Yeah," I murmured, my voice barely louder than the rustling of my lunch bag.
"Actually," she continued, leaning in a bit closer, her eyes lighting up with excitement, "I've already started thinking about the decorations for the wedding. You know, nothing too extravagant, of course. We'll keep it simple, but I was thinking of a winter theme, white roses, soft candles, maybe some pine accents."
I tried to swallow the lump in my throat. "That sounds... nice."
Jessica beamed. "Right? I know we still have time, but it's good to be prepared. I was thinking about talking to your mom and maybe getting some ideas from her. She's been through all this before with your brother, after all."
My heart thudded in my chest, the conversation feeling surreal. She was already planning everything, and yet I hadn't even come to terms with the fact that this was my life my 'future'.
Jessica continued to ramble on about seating arrangements and colour schemes, but my mind drifted. I stared down at my food, absentmindedly picking at my sandwich, trying to imagine myself standing at the altar with her. But no matter how hard I tried, it just didn't feel real.

.-A few minutes earlier-
"Well, you've met him now. Can we let this situation end?" Rosalie asked, crossing her arms and glancing at her siblings. She wasn't in the mood for Alice's giddiness.
Alice gave her a sharp look. "End? Why would it end? He's our mate."
Rosalie huffed. "Another one?" She glanced at Edward, who looked equally unconvinced.
"Yes, Rosalie," Alice retorted, her voice firm. "Isn't he, Jazz?"
Jasper, always calm but direct, nodded. "He is."
Rosalie rolled her eyes, exasperated. "The family's just getting bigger and bigger, isn't it?" she muttered, leaning back in her seat.
"We're going to get our classes changed to be with him," Alice declared matter-of-factly.
"Of course you are," Edward replied dryly, though he still wasn't completely sold on the idea.
"You saw him in class, right? You know what he looks like?" Alice asked, her gaze shifting to Edward.
Edward sighed. "Yeah, I did."
"And?" Alice pressed, her curiosity piqued.
"He was sitting with a girl."
"A girl?" Alice's expression faltered slightly.
"They seemed close," Edward added wanting to say anything to get alice to let this thing go.
"How close?" Jasper asked, narrowing his eyes.
"They were having a conversation," Edward continued, his voice taking on a strange tone. "It was... formal. And a bit unsettling."
"Unsettling how?" Alice pressed.
Edward paused, his brow furrowing deeper. "The word 'devil' was mentioned. Multiple times. But it wasn't casual it was serious like it was part of their normal conversation."
Jasper exchanged a quick glance with Alice. "Strange," he muttered.
Before anyone could respond, their attention was drawn to the cafeteria entrance. Walking through the doors was the brown-haired boy they had spoken to earlier Bennett. He looked anxious, his eyes darting around the room before he made his way to a table in the back, sitting down with the girl Edward had seen earlier.
.
-Back to Bennett-
I glanced up and noticed that Jessica was still talking, her eyes sparkling as she excitedly described how she'd like the wedding reception to look. I nodded along, though my mind wasn't truly in the conversation anymore. My eyes drifted across the cafeteria, and out of nowhere, I caught sight of Alice and Jasper sitting at a nearby table.
They were staring at me.
Their gaze was more intense this time as if they were studying me and trying to figure something out. I felt a chill run down my spine. Why were they watching me? It wasn't just a casual glance; it was like they were trying to read my thoughts or sense something about me that even I didn't know.
"Do you think white and silver would be too bland for the reception?" Jessica's voice cut through my thoughts.
I blinked, trying to focus back on her. "Uh, no. I think it sounds nice."
She smiled at my response, oblivious to the unease building inside me.

-The Cullens' Table-
"Married?" Emmett's booming laugh cut through the low conversation. "He's getting in early!" he joked, nudging Rosalie with a grin.
Alice, however, wasn't laughing. "That can't be right," she murmured, shaking her head in disbelief. Her usually bright expression was clouded with confusion.
Jasper's gaze was fixed on Bennett, his expression unreadable. "He doesn't love her," he stated flatly, his voice hollow.
Edward nodded slightly, glancing between his siblings. "Told you the conversation seemed strange."
"Crazy religious, maybe?" Emmett suggested with a shrug. "Not exactly a secret that this town's full of old-school beliefs."
"More than that," Edward said quietly, his tone serious. "The way they were talking about the future, about... everything. It's like he has no say in it. Like it's already decided for him."
Alice's hands balled into fists, her anxiety palpable. "We need to figure this out. There's something wrong, something we're missing."
Jasper's voice was low, a quiet reassurance just for Alice. "We will. Give it time. We'll get to the bottom of this."
From across the cafeteria, Bennett remained oblivious to the intense discussion happening about him. While Jessica chatted away happily, planning their future, he couldn't shake the feeling that something was off, that his life was slowly slipping out of his control. Meanwhile, Alice and Jasper's unblinking stares lingered, trying to piece together the enigma that was Bennett's life.
