-Alices Perspective-

The evening had gone better than Alice could have planned. Dinner was smooth, almost too easy. Bennett's parents were kind and welcoming, and his mother was especially eager to make them feel like part of the family. But beneath the warmth of home-cooked meals and polite conversation, Alice felt something darker curling in the pit of her stomach, the lingering mention of Jessica—Bennett's fiancée. The mere thought of her made Alice's blood simmer, the jealousy thick in her chest. She could almost see it, like an invisible rope linking Bennett to someone else, someone who didn't deserve him.

After dinner, Bennett's mother smiled sweetly and said, "Why don't you show your friends your room, Bennett? You can work on your project up there."

But then, with a quick glance at them all, she added, "Leave the door open, though."

Alice smiled back politely, but inwardly, she was seething. 'Leave the door open?' As if they were irresponsible teenagers who needed supervision. She clenched her teeth, keeping the polite façade, knowing that the mother's authority would soon be irrelevant. They had Bennett now, and they were closer to entirely having him. The mother's words meant nothing in the grand scheme of things.

The trio made their way upstairs, Bennett leading the way to his room. Alice's fingers grazed the wooden bannister as they ascended, a small smile pulling at her lips as she exchanged a glance with Jasper. They were so close now. So close.

Bennett's room was as she expected. It was simple, a bit unassuming, but something was endearing about it. There were a few personal touches: a poster of a seemingly Christian band on one wall, a small bookshelf, and framed photographs scattered around on a dresser. It was a glimpse into the quieter parts of Bennett's life, the parts he probably kept hidden from everyone else. Alice could almost picture him sitting here, reading, his mind a million miles away. And soon, she would be a part of that world—all of it.

Jasper, ever observant, was already inspecting the room. His gaze landed on the photographs first. A few family snapshots, and 'ah,' there was a picture of Bennett and Jessica. Alice's lips tightened, her eyes narrowing as she approached the photograph. She didn't pick it up, but her fingers itched to crush the frame in her hands.

'How dare she?'

She could almost imagine Jessica's smug face, standing beside Bennett, acting like he belonged to her. 'No. He belongs to me,' Alice thought, the possessiveness rising like a wave inside her. But Jasper's subtle shift in focus interrupted her moment of jealousy. He had moved from the photographs to something else, a half-open drawer with several pill bottles inside.

"Interesting," Jasper murmured under his breath, shooting a glance at Alice. He reached in and carefully picked up one of the bottles, studying the label.

Alice joined him, curiosity piqued. She leaned in, her eyes quickly scanning the names of the medications: antidepressants and anti-anxiety pills. It made sense now why Bennett sometimes seemed distant and unfocused as if he wasn't fully present. The fogginess in his eyes, the way he sometimes seemed detached from the world around him, all added up.

Jasper gave her a small nod, silently communicating that they had to tread carefully here. But in truth, Alice saw it as a gift. His vulnerabilities made him more accessible to mould and influence. Bennett didn't need his medication. He needed them. 'He needed her.'

The sound of footsteps made them both quickly put the bottle back and straighten up. Bennett entered the room, blissfully unaware of what they had just seen.

"This is nice," Jasper said casually, gesturing to the room. "A lot of character."

Bennett smiled shyly, scratching the back of his neck. "Thanks. It's nothing special, but... it's home, I guess."
