As we sat down at the dinner table, everything felt strangely formal. The soft clink of silverware on plates echoed through the room, and even though Mum was smiling and eagerly welcoming Alice and Jasper, I could feel a strange tension hanging in the air. Jasper had offered to help with dinner earlier, but Mum had waved him off with her usual warmth.
"No need, dear. You just sit and enjoy. It's been a while since we've had guests."
Alice smiled brightly at that. "That's so kind of you, Mrs. Peters. Everything smells wonderful," she said, her voice light but with a hint of something I couldn't quite place. It was like she was trying too hard to be sweet, but maybe I was just imagining it.
We had just settled into our seats when the front door creaked open, and Dad walked in, slightly out of breath, his coat draped over his arm.
"Sorry I'm late," he said, wiping his hands on his jacket before placing it on the coat rack. "The organ tuner kept me longer than expected." His eyes swept over the table, and when they landed on Alice and Jasper, his face lit up with a welcoming smile. "Ah, you must be Bennett's friends. I'm his father."
Alice and Jasper immediately stood, as if in perfect sync, their movements almost too smooth. "I'm Alice, and this is Jasper," Alice said, extending her hand. "It's so nice to meet you, Mr. Peters."
Jasper followed suit, shaking Dad's hand. "Pleasure to meet you, sir. Thank you for having us over."
Dad spoke. "Oh, no need to call me 'sir.' I'm just glad Bennett's finally bringing some friends over." He turned to take his seat at the head of the table. "We haven't had anyone over for dinner in a while... except for Jessica, of course—Bennett's fiancée."
The moment the word "fiancée" left his mouth, I felt the ground shift beneath me. My stomach dropped, and I instinctively stared down at my plate, my mood plummeting instantly. Why did he have to mention Jessica? Of all people, why her? I could feel the weight of Alice and Jasper's eyes on me, and I was sure they were judging me now. It wasn't like I had any control over it. Jessica had been chosen for me by my parents ages ago, but it wasn't my decision.
The silence stretched, heavy and uncomfortable. I could feel my face heating up, and I wished I could just disappear.
Alice broke the silence with a soft, almost curious tone. "Oh... I didn't realise you were engaged." Her voice was gentle, but something was sharp beneath it, like she was probing for more information. I dared a glance at her, and her smile was still there, but her eyes were different, too intense, and too focused.
"Yeah," I mumbled, barely managing to meet her gaze. "It's... uh, kind of an arrangement between our families."
Jasper, ever calm and composed, nodded thoughtfully. "I see," he said, his voice low and smooth. "That must be interesting."
I couldn't tell if he was being polite or silently judging me, which made me even more uncomfortable. My fingers fidgeted with the edge of my napkin, and I prayed for the conversation to move on.
Thankfully, Mum, sensing the awkwardness, chimed in with her usual upbeat tone. "Let's focus on the here and now," she said, smiling warmly at me, trying to lift my spirits. "How's your school project going, Bennett? You've been working hard on it, right?"
I nodded, grateful for the shift in topic. "Yeah, it's going well," I said, though my voice was quieter than usual. "We're going to work on it tonight after dinner."
Alice leaned in slightly, her hand brushing against mine under the table. It was a soft touch, but it lingered, her fingers curling just a bit around mine. "I'm sure we'll get a lot done," she said sweetly, though there was a certain possessiveness in her tone that made my heart race in a way I couldn't explain.
Jasper gave a slight, approving nod. "We've got a solid plan," he added, though his eyes were more on me than the conversation.
Dad didn't seem to notice any of this as he sat down, his chair creaking slightly. "Well, before we start eating, we always say grace," he said, looking around the table. "It's our family tradition."
Alice and Jasper exchanged glances, and Alice gave a soft, almost submissive nod. "Of course. We'd love to join you," she said.
We all clasped our hands together, bowing our heads as Dad led the prayer. His words were familiar, thanking God for the food and for bringing new friends into our home. I mumbled along as usual, but the knot in my stomach wouldn't go away. I couldn't stop thinking about Jessica and about how weird it must look to Alice and Jasper. I could feel Alice's hand lightly brushing against mine under the table, which wasn't comforting. It was unsettling, but I didn't want her touch to leave.
When the prayer ended, dinner began. The sounds of forks and knives on plates filled the room, but the tension still lingered, at least for me. Dad, always eager to know more about my friends, asked Alice and Jasper about their family.
"So, tell me," Dad began, his voice casual but curious, "are you two religious at all?"
Alice smiled softly, her head tilting slightly as if considering the question. "We were raised with an appreciation for different beliefs," she said. "But we haven't been part of a specific church in a while."
"Well, if you're ever interested, I'm the vicar at St. Johns Church," Dad offered, smiling warmly. "We'd love to have you join us one Sunday."
Jasper, ever the diplomat, nodded. "We'll definitely think about it. It's always nice to be part of a community."
The conversation continued, but I couldn't shake the feeling that something was off. Every time I looked up, Alice watched me, her gaze intense and unwavering. And Jasper... he was quiet, too quiet, as if he were absorbing every word, every gesture, filing it all away. Their presence, though polite, was suffocating, and I didn't know why.
Just when I thought things were settling down, Dad shifted in his seat, glancing between the three of us. "Well, I'm glad Bennett has made some new friends," he said, his tone warm. "It's good to see him so engaged in school again."
Alice's hand tightened around mine under the table, her fingers curling possessively. I tried to ignore it, but it was impossible to miss the way her thumb gently stroked the back of my hand. "We're happy to be here," she said, her voice sweet, but there was an edge to it that made my skin crawl. "We're excited to spend more time with him."
I forced a smile, hiding the unease gnawing at the back of my mind. Dinner continued, but the tension never really left. Jasper asked a few more polite questions, but his eyes flicked between Alice and me as if silently communicating something I couldn't understand.
