As the final bell rang, I packed up my things, mentally preparing myself for the walk home. I knew Alice and Jasper were supposed to come over later to work on the project, but I figured I'd have a little time to myself before then. But, just as I stood out from my chair, Alice grabbed my arm, "Come on, let's go," Alice spoke excitedly, her face brightening.
"it seemed silly for you to walk home when we're heading to your place anyway, " she said as she dragged me out of the room.I blinked, caught off guard. "Oh, um, I don't mind walking. It's not too far." as we were walking down the hallways to the door. Jasper had already gone ahead.
"Nonsense!" Alice chirped, already stepping closer to me. She slid her hand around my arm, her grip light but insistent. "Why walk when we can give you a ride? It's much quicker, and besides, we'll get to spend more time together."
I hesitated. It felt wrong to refuse, especially since they were going out of their way to help me with the project. And they had been really nice to me all day. I didn't want to seem rude.
"Well, I guess that makes sense" I muttered.
"Great! It'll be fun!" Alice smiled, pulling me gently toward the car. "Come on, Jasper's already got the car running."
Before I knew it, I was slipping into the backseat of their sleek car, the leather seats feeling oddly smooth beneath me. Jasper glanced at me through the rearview mirror, his eyes calm but observant.
"We're excited to meet your mom," he said, smoothly pulling out of the school parking lot. "Alice has been talking about it all day."
Alice grinned, turning slightly in her seat to look back at me. "I really can't wait. I'm sure she's lovely."
I shifted in my seat, feeling a little uneasy at how eager they were to meet my mum. But then again, that's what friends do, right? I tried to focus on being polite. "She's, um, really kind. Strict about some things, though. She's very religious. Church is a big part of her life."
"That's nice," Jasper said thoughtfully. "Having such strong values in your household must be comforting."
I nodded, though I wasn't sure how much they'd really understand. "Yeah, she's protective. Mostly because of what happened with my brother. But she means well."
"Your brother?" Jasper asked, and my heart almost stopped; I didn't want to talk about him.
Alice tilted her head, her smile softening a bit. "She just wants what's best for you, Bennett. That's understandable. And from what you've told us, she sounds like a wonderful person." Alice spoke, managing me to escape Jaspers's question.
"She is," I agreed, feeling a bit more at ease. Maybe they did understand after all.
The rest of the drive was filled with light conversation, Alice asking more questions about my family and hobbies. I answered as best I could, still a little unsure why they were so interested in my life. But it felt nice to have people who cared and who wanted to know me. It wasn't something I was used to.
Before long, Jasper slowed the car as we neared my house. He parked neatly on the road next to the driveway, and as we all climbed out, I noticed the front door swing open. Mum stood there, her apron still tied around her waist, a warm smile on her face.
"Bennett, dear, you're home! And you brought your friends!" she called out, wiping her hands on her apron. Her eyes lit up as she stepped forward to greet them.
"Hi, Mum," I said, walking up to her. "This is Alice and Jasper."
Alice was already stepping forward, her face glowing with enthusiasm. "It's so nice to meet you, Mrs. Peters! Bennett's told us so much about you."
Mum smiled warmly, shaking both of their hands. "It's lovely to meet you both, too. Your mother, Esme, was just delightful at the book club today. We've already arranged to have coffee together tomorrow morning."
"Oh, that's wonderful!" Alice exclaimed, her eyes wide with excitement. "She was so looking forward to it."
"She seemed like such a lovely woman," Mum continued, her voice light as she led us inside. "We had a great time picking out the next book. And she told me so much about you two. What a close-knit family you are."
I glanced over at Alice and Jasper, surprised at how easily everything was falling into place. Mum was always a little cautious about new people, but she seemed completely at ease with them. That made me feel better, too.
As we stepped inside, the smell of cooking filled the air, roast chicken, by the smell of it. My stomach growled quietly, and I realised just how hungry I was.
"Dinner's almost ready," Mum said, smiling back at us. "I hope you're both hungry. I've made plenty."
"Thank you so much for having us," Jasper said politely, his voice calm but sincere. "We're really looking forward to spending time with you and Bennett."
I watched as Alice and Jasper exchanged a quick look, their expressions unreadable for a moment before they turned their attention back to Mum. I felt a strange flutter in my stomach, but I brushed it off. They were just being friendly. There's nothing weird about that.
"Come on, Bennett," Alice said softly, gently nudging my arm. "Let's sit down and get started on the project while your mum finishes up dinner."
"Okay," I agreed, following her into the living room, Jasper trailing just behind us. The whole situation felt surreal, like a dream I wasn't quite sure I was part of. But I told myself this was normal. This was what it felt like to have friends, people who cared about you, who wanted to be part of your life.
As we sat down on the couch and Alice pulled out her notebook, I caught Jasper glancing around the room, his eyes lingering on the photos of my family on the walls. He didn't say anything, but I could sense he was studying them carefully, just like he did with everything.
And as we settled in, the warmth of the house around me, I couldn't shake the feeling that everything was falling into place far too smoothly. But then again, why shouldn't it? Maybe things were finally working out. Maybe Alice and Jasper were exactly what I needed.
