The afternoon had barely begun when I saw her again. Alice. The chirpy voice reached me before I even noticed her approaching."Oh, hi Bennett!" she called out, her tone bright, as if we were old friends.
"Hi again," I replied, still feeling a little off from lunch. Class had just ended, and I was making my way to my next one when she appeared.
"Looks like we're in this class with you," she said, her enthusiasm unwavering.
"Oh, okay," I mumbled, unsure of how to feel about her sudden presence. Part of me was grateful for the friendly face, but another part, the part of me that had always been more reserved, felt a twinge of something else.
"So, where do you sit? I'd like to sit next to you," she asked, her eyes shining with a kind of eagerness that was hard to say no to.
"You want to sit next to me?" I echoed, a little surprised by how forward she was. It wasn't something I was used to.
"Of course I do, silly! We want to be your friends," she replied with a giggle, like it was the most natural thing in the world.
My face warmed at her words, and I could feel my cheeks reddening. I wasn't sure why I felt embarrassed, but something about her directness, her confidence, stirred something in me. I wasn't used to being the center of attention, especially not in a way that made me feel... exposed.
"Aww, you're so cute!" she teased, before grabbing my hand. The touch sent a strange jolt through my body, my stomach doing an odd flip as her fingers wrapped around mine. She pulled me towards the classroom, and I followed, too bewildered to resist. Jasper trailed behind us, silent as ever.
As we entered the room, Alice led me to a pair of desks in the second row, her hand still holding mine. Her grip was surprisingly firm, a reminder that there was something more to her than met the eye. For someone so small, she had a way of making me feel powerless. It was unsettling, and yet, there was a strange comfort in her presence, as if being near her quieted some part of the confusion in my mind.
I sat down beside her, my heart still racing, though I couldn't explain why. I caught myself sneaking a glance at her, wondering why I felt this way. My stomach felt strange, like it was tied in knots, and there was a light tug at my heart, as if something about her presence stirred feelings I didn't fully understand.
"So, what are you doing after school?" Alice asked, settling into her seat with a casualness that belied the intensity of her gaze.
"Oh, nothing. Just heading home," I said, keeping my answer simple. My mother's rules left little room for much else.
Her expression shifted, just for a moment a flicker of something like disappointment, but it vanished as quickly as it came, replaced by her usual bright smile. "Your mom keeps you on a short leash, huh?"
I shrugged, not wanting to get into the details. "Yeah, she's just... protective."
"Overprotective, sounds like," Alice mused, her head tilting slightly as though she were trying to read deeper into my thoughts. "But that's okay. We can hang out at school. No one's stopping us from doing that, right?"
There was something about the way she said it that made me pause. Her words were light, but underneath them was a subtle possessiveness. It was as if she had already decided how things would go, like I didn't have much choice in the matter. I swallowed hard and nodded, not trusting myself to say anything that wouldn't betray my confusion. Thankfully, the conversation ended as the class began.
All through the lesson, I felt her eyes on me. Even when she was looking at the teacher, it was like her attention never fully left. I stole a glance at Jasper, and though his gaze wasn't as obvious, I could feel it too his quiet observation. It wasn't intimidating exactly, but it left me feeling exposed, like they could see things about me that I hadn't even figured out yet. I felt small between the two
As the teacher began to explain a group project, Alice perked up immediately. We were allowed to pick our own groups, and before I could even process it, she was already making decisions.
"Looks like we're working together, Bennett!" she announced, her golden eyes gleaming. "Give me your number, and we'll text you about the project later."
I hesitated, fingers hovering over my phone. I didn't usually give out my number. In fact, I didn't get asked for it often. But the way she smiled at me, expecting compliance, made it hard to say no. I handed her my phone, and she quickly typed her number in, smiling triumphantly as she handed it back.
"I'll give your number to Jasper too, just in case," she added, almost as an afterthought.
Jasper hadn't spoken a word, but his presence loomed beside her, quiet and watchful. I glanced at him, his expression neutral, and nodded.
As the bell rang, Alice glanced up at me. "Where are you headed next?"
"Ancient History," I said, packing up my things as fast as I could.
"Too bad! Me and Jasper have Spanish," she replied with a slight pout. "But I'll see you after school. We can say goodbye then!" She gave me a playful wink before skipping out the door, Jasper following close behind.
"A-Alright" I spoke seemingly to myself not knowing what was happening and why my tummy felt full
.
The rest of the day passed in a blur, but the unease clung to me like a second skin. By the time Ancient History ended, the sky outside was still thick with grey clouds, casting a gloomy light over everything. I packed my bag and made my way toward the front entrance, the sensation of being watched never fully leaving me.
As I pushed through the crowd of students, I heard Alice's familiar voice call out again.
"Bennett!"
She was standing by the doors with Jasper, her smile as bright as ever, while his intense gaze made me feel like I was walking under a spotlight. The feeling in my stomach returned tight, uncomfortable and my heart seemed to skip a beat. I wasn't sure what it was, but something about Alice's presence unsettled me, in ways I couldn't ignore.
"Hey," I replied, trying to keep my voice steady.
"Did you survive the rest of your day?" she asked playfully, tilting her head as if we were in on some private joke.
"Yeah, it was fine," I muttered, glancing between her and Jasper. His silence spoke louder than anything he could've said.
"We're really looking forward to the project," Alice chirped. "It'll be fun working together, don't you think?"
"Sure," I answered, though "fun" wasn't the word I'd use. It felt more like I was being slowly drawn into something strange, something I couldn't quite understand but couldn't pull away from either.
"Oh! I'll text you later about the project," Alice said, waving her phone.
I nodded, unable to shake the feeling that there was more to her words than what she was letting on. She gave me another bright smile before she and Jasper slipped into the crowd, disappearing as quickly as they had appeared.
I stood there for a moment, staring after them. My skin tingled, and I couldn't shake the strange sensation tugging at me, like I was being pulled into something.
With a final glance at the darkening sky, I turned and headed home, feeling like I was walking away from one mystery only to step into another.
