"Let's drop off your coat at your locker," Alice said, her voice bright and cheerful, pulling me away from my spiralling thoughts. I nodded, thankful for her distraction.

As we approached my locker, the familiar hum of students chatting and laughing surrounded us, but I could only focus on the knot tightening in my stomach. Alice gave me a reassuring smile, and I tried to return it, though my nerves were starting to fray.

"Come on, open it," she encouraged now that we had reached my locker, watching as I struggled to remember the combination. Finally, with a soft click, the lock sprang open. I let out a breath I hadn't realised I was holding. I opened the door, revealing the clutter of books and papers inside, and quickly put my bag down and started to take off my coat.

"Here, let me help," Alice offered, stepping forward. Her cheerful demeanour made my face warm. I hadn't had anyone offer to help me like this before, and it felt nice, albeit a little embarrassing. She was acting differnt today, im guessing last night has advanced our friendship.

"Thanks," I muttered, feeling the warmth of gratitude mixed with my unease as I handed her the coat, watching her put it on the hook.

As I turned to grab my backpack, I noticed Jasper standing a little behind us, his expression calm and reassuring. He smiled softly and took my bag from me. "I'll carry this for you," he said, its weight suddenly feeling lighter in his hands.

"Thanks," I replied, trying to sound casual, but a part of me was still reeling from the earlier anxiety, causing me to stare down to the floor. Just as we closed my locker, a voice broke through the chatter around us.

"Alice!" A blonde girl approached, her gaze sharp and assessing as she locked eyes on me. I didn't recognise her, but there was an undeniable air of authority about her. "So, this is a thing now?" she asked, her tone pointed as she gestured toward me, her expression teetering between amusement and something more serious.

"I don't know what you mean," Alice replied, her cheerfulness faltering momentarily.

"It's already weird enough for the town that you and Jasper are together alongside the rest of us," the girl continued, a hint of irritation lacing her voice. "And now you're dragging someone else into this? People are talking."

I felt my stomach churn at her words, confusion washing over me. 'Alice and Jasper are together?' I thought, feeling the ground shift beneath my feet. Suddenly, everything clicked into place, including the way they held hands, the shared glances, and the effortless connection between them. My stomach twisted in an unexpected way, a strange mixture of surprise and something else I couldn't quite identify. But just as quickly, that feeling faded, leaving only confusion in its wake.

The blonde girl looked at me with a mixture of curiosity and scepticism. "What are you thinking, Alice? You know how people talk in this town. You can't just drag someone else into your chaotic relationship."

"Relationship?" I echoed my voice barely above a whisper, my heart racing. 'Is that what they are? So I wasn't just hearing things' I felt a pang of something I couldn't quite place. Was it jealousy? Discomfort? I wasn't sure.

"That's enough, Rosalie," Jasper said, his tone low but firm, a protective edge creeping into his voice. He stepped slightly closer to me, almost as if he were shielding me from whatever negativity 'Rosalie', as I now knew, was throwing our way. I felt a rush of warmth at his action, but it was quickly overshadowed by the confusion swirling in my mind.

"Seriously, Alice?" Rosalie pressed, crossing her arms. "You think this is a good idea? Adding someone else into the mix?" She paused, her gaze shifting to me, her eyes narrowing slightly. "You're not just going to let them play with your feelings, are you?"

Before I could even respond, Alice stepped forward, her expression fierce. "That's enough, Rosalie! Bennett is my friend. We're not doing anything wrong."

"yes you are" Rosalie poked back matching Alices tone.

The tension hung thick in the air, and I felt small, caught in a battle between the two of them. I looked at Alice, who radiated determination, and then at Rosalie, whose gaze was sharp and scrutinising. I didn't like being a topic of contention, it left me unsettled.

"Let's go, Benny," Alice said suddenly, her voice cutting through the tension. It was the first time she had used that nickname, which sent a flutter through my stomach. There was something comforting about it, something that made me feel a little more at ease, even amidst the chaos and hostile nature of the previous conversation.

Without waiting for my reply, Alice grabbed my hand and pulled me away from Rosalie, who watched us with a mixture of annoyance and curiosity. Jasper stayed close behind, his presence reassuring as we navigated the hallway.

"Sorry about that," Alice said, her voice softening as we walked. "Rosalie can be a bit much sometimes. But don't worry; she doesn't speak for all of us, and soon enough, she'll like you; she doesn't have a choice."

I nodded, still trying to process what had just happened. "I didn't know you two were together," I admitted, my voice barely above a whisper. My heart raced as I spoke, unsure how to articulate my feelings. I didn't want them to feel awkward around me, but why were they so touchy with me?

"We are, but that doesn't change anything," Alice said quickly, glancing back at me with a bright smile that felt genuine. "What matters is that we want to be your friends. I promise, you don't need to worry about anything."

As we made our way to class, I felt a strange mix of emotions swirling inside me, confusion, curiosity, and something else I couldn't quite identify, but I liked it. It was warm and made me feel squishy, that made me smile.
