-Jaspers POV-
Sitting in the car on the way back, I relished the quiet tension of our family. Everyone's emotions simmered, each unique and gratifying. Esme's warmth and calm approval were particularly satisfying. She'd taken to Bennett right away. Beside her, Carlisle exuded a quiet frustration that lingered, his reserved disapproval barely veiled. I couldn't help but smile, knowing his mind was turning over Bennett's father's ignorance. I'd barely had to push him in that direction; the man had done it to himself.
"Thank you very much for coming with us," I said finally, breaking the silence. It felt important to address them all as if speaking aloud. Our shared interest in Bennett solidified it further.
"I think he is lovely," Esme replied, a soft smile gracing her face as she glanced my way. I could feel her steady affection radiating—a firm reassurance and her own satisfaction that we'd found someone so sweet.
"His mother seems nice enough, but I have met her before," Esme continued thoughtfully, "though I can't say the same for his father."
"Arrogant," Carlisle agreed, his tone clipped but controlled. His hand rested on the steering wheel, fingers flexing ever so slightly in irritation. "Far too full of himself, if I'm honest."
"Wasn't much interested in hearing what you had to say, was he?" I added lightly, still savouring the easy way I'd swayed Bennett's mum for their favour. It was so simple, coaxing the kind of warmth and trust from her that her husband clearly found impossible.
I felt Alice's approval beside me, a keen excitement I shared as she commented, "I'm glad Bennett seems nothing like him. He's sweet." Her fingers lightly drummed on the seat next to her, her thoughts buzzing with a lightness she didn't have to hide.
In between us back, Nessie, who'd been surprisingly quiet, now piped up. "Why wasn't I allowed to meet him?"
"That wasn't our agreement," Alice replied, her voice gentle yet firm, holding back a smile.
"I said you'd see him, not meet him. And you can properly meet him this week, hopefully."
I could feel Nessie's scepticism. "And I can talk to him?" she pressed.
"Yes, you'll be able to talk to him," Alice confirmed.
But Nessie wasn't letting it go. "I want more than just a 'hello.'" She crossed her arms, and I couldn't help but smirk at her determination. Alice's half-promises wouldn't satisfy her this time.
"I'll make sure you have time to speak with him properly," I said, adding just enough sincerity to ease her back into a more comfortable mood. Her frustration dissipated, replaced by the satisfaction that she'd gotten exactly what she wanted for now.
The car fell silent for a beat, and I let my mind drift back to the church, replaying my influence on Bennett's mother. I'd softened her around the edges, replacing her guardedness with a sense of calm, then guiding her toward a warm fondness for Alice. It had been satisfying. The ease of it all, how she'd brightened at Alice's attention and dismissed her own hesitations without question. And the way Alice's words had settled into her thoughts, planting something so close to admiration. It was all so smooth that Melissa would see Alice as a constant bright spot in Bennett's life, the one who truly understood him. She'd look forward to their time together; she'd even feel a protective inclination for her, letting her guard down just enough to be manageable.
"Was he like that when you two stopped over for dinner?" Carlisle's question brought me back.
"No, actually," Alice said thoughtfully. "If anything, he seemed more open to talking with me than Jasper."
"Strange," Carlisle murmured, a puzzled crease between his brows. His disapproval was lingering, a mix of worry and doubt about our methods, but Alice had always been better at swaying his perspective.
Alice leaned forward slightly, a touch of insistence in her voice. "But you see why we want him out of that house."
Carlisle sighed, the weariness in his shoulders easing as Esme placed a hand on his arm. "I don't agree with your tactics," he replied, his eyes forward, "but I do understand why you're doing it."
"I don't like him in that house," Alice repeated softly. Her tone was almost pleading, directed at Esme as much as Carlisle, and I could feel the sympathy it sparked in both of them. Alice's words had softened them, coaxing them toward our side with a genuine appeal.
"There's nothing illegal happening there," Carlisle said firmly, though his expression was conflicted. "So we can't step in formally."
"They're forcing him into a marriage he doesn't want," Alice added, her voice tightening, leaning into the vulnerability she knew Carlisle would feel. Her words lingered in the air, and for a moment, the depth of her attachment to Bennett was crystal clear to them both.
"Let's continue this at the house," Carlisle concluded, looking at Nessie in the rearview mirror. His tone was gentle, a signal to hold the heavier conversation for later, away from ears too young for this.
I settled back, letting the calm approval in the car settle around me. I could feel it all: the soft admiration from Esme, Carlisle's reluctant understanding, Nessie's simmering curiosity, all of it confirming that they were beginning to see things our way. It was a perfect start, everything slotting into place just as we'd intended.
