-Bennett's POV-
As I stood on the doorstep, my mom handed me a plastic container of brownies with an enthusiastic smile, placing it gently on top of my lunch bag.
"Now, I baked these just for the Cullens, so be sure you give them to Mrs. Cullen tonight, okay?" she said, eyes twinkling.
"Okay," I replied, adjusting the straps of my backpack to hold everything.
"And remember to be nice to Alice and her family. Such wonderful people," she continued, practically glowing. My mom hadn't stopped talking about Alice since yesterday. She was always polite, but this level of excitement was unusual for her.
"I will, mum."
My dad walked in just then, adjusting his tie as he entered the kitchen. "Be polite and respectful, Bennett," he said, his tone firm but approving. "I like this family."
"Yes, sir. I will," I repeated, a slight blush creeping onto my cheeks. The excitement felt contagious, making my stomach flutter with nerves.
My mum gave me one last encouraging smile. "Good. Now, off you go. Your friends will be here any minute."
I slipped the brownies and lunch into my backpack and stepped outside, barely waiting a minute before I saw Jasper's car rolling smoothly down the street.
The car pulled up to the curb, and Jasper's voice greeted me warmly from the driver's seat, his usual spot. "Good morning, Bennett."
Sitting in the front, Alice turned with a grin, her voice sweet and bright. "Morning, Benny!" she called, her use of the nickname sending a strange, pleasant shiver through me. They both wore matching cream turtlenecks with dark jackets, coordinated as usual and looking effortlessly perfect. They made such a striking pair that I couldn't help staring for a moment.
"Hi," I mumbled as I climbed into the backseat behind Jasper. Settling in, I felt an odd excitement tingle through me.
Alice looked over her shoulder, beaming. "Can't wait for tonight! Esme hasn't stopped talking about how cute she thought you were at church yesterday."
My face warmed. "She did?"
"She did," Alice affirmed, sounding amused by my reaction.
"Oh!" I replied, trying to keep my voice steady, but I couldn't help the tiny smile tugging at my lips. Knowing Esme had thought I was cute made my chest feel light.
Alice held out a paper bag towards me, her smile warm. "We brought you a muffin for breakfast, Benny."
"You did?" I said, surprised but grateful.
"Just for you," she said as I took the bag. Inside was a warm muffin, its scent rich and comforting.
"You didn't get any for yourselves?" I asked, glancing from Alice to Jasper, confused.
Alice giggled, her eyes sparkling with something I couldn't quite place. "No, silly. This is just for you. Now, eat up before it goes cold."
"Thank you," I murmured, ducking my head a little as I started to eat. The muffin was delicious, and the way Alice was watching made me feel warm and a little shy.
"Good boy," Alice hummed as I took another bite, her tone somehow both gentle and slightly controlling. I pushed that thought aside, focusing instead on how good the muffin tasted.
"It's really good," I said, smiling shyly.
"Good," she replied, and her gaze stayed on me just a beat longer than usual before she turned back around. After I finished, Alice returned her hand to me, her expression warm. "Come on, Benny. Hand, please?"
I hesitated, then placed my hand in hers. Her fingers were always cold, but her grip was firm, comforting even. We rode silently for a moment before my curiosity finally got the best of me.
"Why are your hands always cold?" I asked. It was something I'd noticed about both Alice and Jasper. They seemed unaffected by the weather, always cooler to the touch.
Alice was quiet for a beat too long, her fingers tightening around mine. "Am I?" she asked, her voice light.
"Yeah, you're always freezing, even when we're inside," I said, hoping my question didn't come off as rude.
She glanced over her shoulder, her smile warm yet cryptic. "You don't mind, do you?"
"N-No, I don't mind," I replied quickly, feeling that nervous flutter in my stomach again.
"That's my good boy," she said, patting my hand before facing forward again. She didn't answer my question, leaving me to wonder as I watched her and Jasper exchange a knowing glance up front.
Jasper's voice broke the quiet. "How was your evening, Bennett?"
"Yes, Benny," Alice chimed in, turning back to me with a small smile, "how was your evening?" They both looked at me intently as though the answer held some more profound importance.
"It was good," I replied, taken aback by how intently they seemed to care. My heart fluttered again, and that strange warmth bloomed in my chest as I struggled to hold their steady gaze.
