-Alice's POV-

The living room was unusually peaceful tonight, starkly contrasting the tension bubbling within me. Jasper and I hadn't spent the night at home in a while, yet here we were, trying to act normal on a Friday night. Carlisle was still working at the hospital, Rosalie and Bella were off hunting, and Jacob and Emmett were glued to the gaming console, engrossed in their virtual battle. Even with the sound of gunfire and laughter filling the room, I could feel the weight of Edward's eyes on me and Jasper.

Esme was nearby, arranging some flowers on the table, her calming presence starkly contrasting Edward's hovering disapproval. Renesmee sat beside me, her wide eyes bright with curiosity as she fired off question after question to us about Bennett.

"So, I'll see him on Sunday?" Renesmee(remember she is around 12 in this book, in appearance) asked, her voice hopeful.

"Yes," I replied, keeping my tone soft for her though my mind was elsewhere.

"Grandma said she met his mum. Is she nice?" Renesmee's voice held that innocent eagerness that was hard to deny.

"She's... alright," I said with a shrug, not wanting to dive into the complexities of Bennett's family in front of the others.

I saw Edward shift slightly from his spot against the wall, his gaze sharpening as Nessie continued.

"Does Bennett like sports? What's his favourite book? What does he—"

Edward sighed softly, cutting off her rapid questions. "Nessie, sweetheart," he said gently, his voice carrying a tone of fatherly patience. "Why don't you go play in your room for a little while?"

Renesmee's face fell, her excitement dimming instantly. "But—"

"Now," Edward said, firmer this time, though his eyes softened as she looked up at him with a pout. "We need to talk," he added, glancing pointedly at me and Jasper.

With a reluctant sigh, Renesmee slid off the stool. "Alright," she mumbled, clearly disappointed but knowing better than to argue with her father. She shot me a look over her shoulder as she headed upstairs. "You'll tell me more later, right?"

"Of course," I replied, offering a reassuring smile that I wasn't entirely sure I meant. I loved her curiosity but needed a break from her constant questions about Bennett.

As Renesmee disappeared down the hall, Edward's attention shifted entirely back to us, his expression more serious now that she was gone.

"I don't think you're healthily handling this," he stated bluntly, his disapproval coming through clearly now. I could feel Jasper's tension next to me, but I beat him to the response.

"And you're the definition of a healthy person when it comes to relationships?" I shot back, narrowing my eyes. Edward's constant judgment had been grating on me for a while now. He didn't have the right to lecture us when he had been in far worse situations with Bella. I'd supported him then. He didn't get to criticise me now.

Edward's jaw tightened, clearly annoyed. "Our situations aren't the same, Alice," he said, his voice carrying a calm, measured tone that only irritated me more.

"Oh really? How are they different?" I challenged, leaning back in the armchair and crossing my arms, staring at him, daring him to make a valid point.

"You already have each other," Edward replied, his voice sharper now. "You don't need to drag someone else into this, someone who doesn't belong in our world."

I laughed bitterly, shaking my head. "Unlike you, we're not constantly fighting the urge to kill him," I snapped. It was a low blow, a reminder of his struggles with controlling his bloodlust around Bella when they first met, but I wasn't in the mood to play nice anymore.

Edward's eyes flashed with anger briefly before he regained control of himself. "That's not fair, Alice. You know what I meant."

"And we're not going to pretend he doesn't exist," Jasper chimed in, his voice calm but laced with a cold edge. He'd been quiet for most of the conversation, letting me take the lead, but I could feel his simmering frustration. He hated it when Edward acted like he knew better than us.

Edward's lips thinned, but before he could argue further, Esme stepped in, her gentle voice cutting through the tension like a warm breeze. "I can't wait to meet him," she said, her soft smile directed at me and Jasper. I could see she was trying to ease the friction in the room, but she meant every word. Esme had been nothing but supportive since we told her about Bennett, and her excitement about meeting him was genuine.

"You'll love him. He's so sweet," I said, my tone softening for Esme's sake. Bennett was sweet, scared, maybe, but kind-hearted in a way that was rare. Esme would see that, I was sure.

Esme's expression warmed even further. "We need to have him over properly. I'll make sure to ask his mother," she said thoughtfully, always the one to make sure things were done right.

"Thank you," I said, grateful that she was willing to take that step. Having Bennett come over for a proper family evening would be a huge step forward. He needed to see what our family was like, to understand us better, and it allowed us to spend time together alone out of school in private.

"I don't get it," Jacob muttered, half-turning from his game to glance at us. "You're all just... okay with this?"

"Of course I am," Esme replied, her voice filled with maternal warmth. "He's important to Alice and Jasper, so he's important to me."

My heart swelled a little at her words. Esme was always the heart of our family, and knowing she was on our side made everything feel more possible.

"He's very important," Jasper added, his voice carrying a weight to it. I could feel the intensity of his thoughts and the depth of his obsession with Bennett. We didn't discuss it out loud, but we didn't need to.

"Then he's very important to me," Esme echoed, smiling warmly at us.

Perfect. With Esme on board, Carlisle would follow without hesitation. He trusted her implicitly. Everything was aligning. I could feel the anticipation growing in me at the thought of Bennett meeting our family and becoming part of this world. It felt right. He was ours, and soon, he would have no reason to leave.

Edward's lingering presence, his disapproving silence, no longer bothered me. He would come around eventually, or he wouldn't. It didn't matter.

Esme glanced at the clock. "We'll have everything ready for Sunday. I'll make sure Carlisle is there," she said thoughtfully.

"Thank you," I repeated, my voice softer this time. Jasper's hand brushed lightly against mine, a silent reassurance that everything was going according to plan.

Jacob sighed, clearly still baffled by the whole situation, but he didn't argue. "You guys are intense," he muttered, returning to his game.

"You have no idea," Emmett said with a smirk.

As the conversation drifted on and the night settled into its usual rhythm, I felt a sense of satisfaction. Everything was falling into place. Bennett was becoming more entwined with us, and soon, he'd have no reason to leave. Sunday couldn't come fast enough.
