After Coach Mulcahy had walked into the boys changing rooms, and seen Johnny and I kissing, the fucking prick pulled out his phone right away to let Mr Twomey know that he should be ringing both our parents. I was fucking shitting it, how in gods name was I supposed to go home to my psychotic father, knowing the names he'd be calling me, and the things he'd be belting me with.
"Grace?" Aoibh whispered, snapping me out of my thoughts. "Are you still up?"
"Yeah" I whispered back, sitting up and turning on the small light in the corner of the hotel room. The one that Johnny was originally going to persuade Coach Mulcahy to give him, and the one that I was going to sneak into. But instead I was here with my best friends, only Orlaith and Clara were fast asleep. Which was fair, because it was quarter to six, in the morning. I hadn't slept a wink, my mind was reeling with thoughts of Johnny and his surgery, and the impending doom which I knew would await me as soon as I stepped in the front door.
"Do you think he's out of surgery?" she asked, sitting up in the double bed which we were sharing.
"I'm not sure" I replied, shrugging. "The only person I know that's had surgery is Joey, but that was just to get his appendix out when he was ten, and it only took an hour and a half."
"He'll be alright, Grace" she reassured, putting her hand on mine.
"I hope so" I answered, completely disturbed by the soft knocking on the hotel door.
"Lynchy" a muffled voice came from the opposite side of the door, "leave me in, will ya?"
I quickly slipped out of the bed, opening the door- I tried my best not to wake the girls, but they were already groaning from the knocking. I had already guessed that it was Gibsie— because he cared about Johnny as much as I did, so I wasn't surprised when I saw him standing outside the door. "Is he okay?" I asked immediately, "Did you talk to his parents? Is his Mam there?"
"Christ" Gibsie muttered as he walked into our room, closing the door behind him. "One question at a time."
"What time is it?" Orlaith groaned.
"Shh" Aoibh, Clara, and I all hushed her, desperate for answers from Gibsie.
"He's out of surgery" he answered, leaning against the wall, rubbing a hand over his face. "Everything went fine, his Mam and Dad got up there just after he went into surgery."
"Are you going to see him?" I asked immediately.
"Hell fucking yes I'm going to see him" he replied, "and you're coming with me."
"Are you sure?" I asked, Aoibh was already scrambling to find my clothes.
"Course I am" he nodded, "He'll want to see ya, Grace."
