Bright and early the security camera picked up the front door. It was Tree, arriving unannounced but with an air of urgency. She had come to discuss the next steps in their new relationship's public unveiling.
"Travis, I've already talked to Pia this morning," Tree began as she settled into a chair at the dining room table. "You have your podcast with your brother starting up again in about a week, right? I saw the photo you sent on Instagram and Taylor also mentioned the friendship bracelet you made, and I think that's our in."
Travis nodded, feeling the weight of everything as Tree began to outline her plan. Known for being a very coachable player both on and off the field, he was used to taking direction and executing it flawlessly. This situation was no different. Taylor trusted Tree's judgment and so would he.
"I want you to talk about it on the podcast. Be honest up to the point of leaving the concert. Tell your listeners that you didn't get to see Taylor, and that your feelings were hurt. We'll let the fans in just enough so they start rooting for this relationship. You're the polar opposite of Joe and Matty, and I think the fans will gravitate toward that."
Tree paused, gauging their reactions before continuing. "From there, we let the fans feel like they're part of the match-making. They'll start sharing and tagging Taylor, trying to connect the invisible strings themselves. It creates buzz without us having to say too much."
Travis glanced at Taylor, who gave him an encouraging nod.
Tree continued, shifting the conversation to Travis's public image. "We can't fully erase your past online, especially with that reality show still out there. But with your brother's documentary coming out soon, we need to clean up anything that might be problematic. Pia is already scrubbing anything current that could be an issue. I'm surprised she didn't do this earlier, but it is what it is. Luckily, you don't have anything too out there, so we're in a good place."
Travis appreciated Tree's directness. He knew his past wasn't squeaky clean, but he had worked hard to grow beyond it. "I'll make sure everything's taken care of," he assured her.
"Good," Tree said, standing up. "Now, have fun, you two. Travis, I'll be in touch before the podcast. And one more thing... don't tell your family just yet. We want your brother to be genuinely surprised so that the conversation flows naturally."
As Tree left, Travis turned to Taylor, who was watching him with a smile.
"You ready for it?" she asked.
"You and your team really are masterminds" Travis replied, leaning in to kiss her softly. "Let's fucking go."
