Two weeks after winning the Super Bowl against the Lions for a historic three-peat, Travis received a call from Coach Reid asking him to come to the facility. The energy of the win was still lingering, but something about the tone in Coach's voice told Travis this wasn't just a casual catch-up.
As Travis entered the office, Coach Reid greeted him with a warm smile, though the weight of the conversation ahead was clear. "Son, I wanted you to hear it from me before I announce it at the press conference."
Travis nodded, already knowing what was coming. He'd anticipated this moment if they won the three-peat. It was the perfect way to cap off a legendary career. "You're retiring," Travis said with a mixture of pride and bittersweetness filling his voice.
Coach Reid chuckled, but there was a hint of emotion there. "Yeah, it's time. I've been thinking about this for a while, and I know it's the right moment."
Travis grinned, pulling Coach into a hug. "Man, I'm so happy for you, Coach. You deserve to enjoy this time, and you're going out as a legend. Hall of Fame, baby!" he exclaimed, the admiration for the man who had guided his career.
As they pulled away, Coach looked Travis in the eye, his tone more serious. "You know, I've been thinking about you, too. You've always said you wouldn't play for another coach, but you've got a year left on your contract."
Travis leaned back down into his chair, taking a deep breath. "I know I said that, and I meant it, but..." He paused, gathering his thoughts. "But there's another reason, Coach. Taylor's pregnant."
Coach Reid's eyes lit up. "Congratulations, kid!" he said, his voice filled with genuine excitement.
Travis smiled, the decision already solidified in his mind. "I'm going to retire. I've seen what my brother went through, having the girls while playing. You miss important moments. I don't want that and we just want to enjoy this time as a family."
Coach Reid nodded, understanding the weight of Travis's decision. "That makes sense. Family's everything. And you're going to be one hell of a dad, Travis."
As soon as Travis stepped through the door at home, he was met with Taylor's eager eyes, her body curled comfortably on the couch, one hand resting gently over her small but growing bump. She looked up at him, anticipation in her voice. "How did it go with Andy?"
Travis smiled softly, the weight of the conversation still fresh in his mind. He walked over to her, his hand instinctively reaching for her belly as he leaned down to kiss her forehead. "Coach is retiring," he said, his tone filled with a mix of pride and nostalgia.
Taylor's face lit up. "I'm so happy for him and his family. He's earned it," she said warmly. "Did you tell him what you've decided?"
Travis nodded as he sat beside Taylor, pulling her gently into his arms. "I did. And he's happy for us too," he said, his voice beginning to waver, emotion catching up with him. "I told him I'm retiring to be all in, for you, for the baby... for us."
As his words hit, tears began to well up in his eyes. It was the end of an era, a chapter closing not just for him but for everything he had built with the Chiefs. His career, the memories, the brotherhood, it all came flooding back. Taylor noticed, her heart swelling with love for him, and she reached up, wiping away his tears with the sleeve of her cardigan.
Without saying anything, Travis slowly shifted, resting his head on her lap as if seeking the comfort he knew only she could provide. Taylor gently ran her fingers through his hair, soothing him with her touch, her movements soft and calming. He lay there for a moment, collecting himself, and then he rolled slightly, finding himself eye level with her little bump. A tender smile crept onto his face and in a quiet, soft voice, he began to speak to their baby. "Hey, ducky" Travis whispered with a grin, "guess what? Your dad's retiring from football, which means I get to hang out with you and your mom all the time. That's right, no more getting hit by giant dudes on a field or away games, now I'm all yours."
